Good temperature for Goldfish

What is a good temperature for goldfish? I read on a page on Facebook that goldfish should be kept at 74 to 80 degrees and that just because they can be kept in cold water doesn't mean that should be. They also said that the warm water keeps them healthier then they would be in cold water.

It depends on the type of goldfish. Some prefer warmer, some prefer colder, but the general range is 64-74. Temperatures can be higher but shouldn’t exceed 80. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, I haven’t kept goldfish since I was a kid and won one at the school fair. Didn’t put a heater in that tank and the fish survived for a couple months with another goldfish in there that my sister won (it was a half gallon bowl, looking back I know that’s extremely bad but it was all my parents could afford at the time. There was no filter, heater, or anything like that, but give me a break I was like 5 and knew nothing about fish)

I was planning on a lionchu, ranchu and a oranda goldfish. I was going to keep the temperature at 68 degrees.

68 degrees is fine for the goldfish you mentioned, it’s right in the range of those goldfish.

I have a 75g tank that is regularly 73-80 degrees. I don't use a heater or anything, I just have a warm home. A lot of fancy goldfish are bred in places like Thailand where they put on jackets if it gets to 70 degrees and closer to 110 is the norm. When we had a heat wave and my AC broke, I was monitoring the tank and ready to put in frozen bottles of water if it got over 83. My fish don't mind the high temp at all. The really important thing is that you keep the temperature from fluctuating too much too fast. If the room is a comfortable temperature for you, it's fine for them as well. I like to keep a lid on my tank to keep evaporation down (and stuff out), which also helps keep the temperature more stable.

On the low end though, goldfish can survive in ponds and the like by going torpid in near-freezing temperatures. Goldfish are not true 'cold water fish' in the way that something like a trout or a char. It's old language that basically means they're not 'tropical' fish that can die if the temps dip below 70.

Keep in mind that saying "goldfish" is like saying "dog." Can a husky survive sleeping out in the falling snow? Heck yeah. Could a Mexican Hairless survive sleeping out in the falling snow? uh, no. Are they both fine at 70 degrees? Pretty much!

When I do a water change I always check the water temp and try to keep the new water within 1 degree of the current water. I use LED lighting (it's actually an LED shop light just set on top of the glass tank cover) and I don't get direct sun, so there isn't anything that raises up the temperature except the ambient air. Oh, and you don't need a fancy thermometer. I just use a digital meat thermometer I got at the dollar store.
