Good Place To Get Fine Sand

Hi, I've been looking into changing the substrate in my aquarium into a fine sand for my African dwarf frogs. Thus far, I have not been able to find any trustworthy stores that specifically sell any fine or smooth sand that is safe for aquariums. I own a 3 gallon tank.

 

Play sand or pool sand is safe and cheap. You can get it at walmart.

 

Play sand is a good option. I buy mine at Lowes, for 4 bucks for a 50 pound bag. I hear its at Tractor supply and Home depot as well.

 

Pool filter sand is MUCH better than play sand. Play sand has too many fine dust particles that get everywhere, even after being washed 5 times.

 

I personally use "all purpose sand" from Lowes, and it's been fine in several of my tanks. It's some of the finest, siltiest sand I've ever seen. It's a beast to wash beforehand, but worth it. It was also super cheap.

 

Appreciate the suggestions everyone, although another question how would I go about washing said sand? are there any particular steps or ingredients that I must follow?

 

I use a bucket, fill it no more than 1/4 of the way with sand, then put it in the bathtub. I fill it with water, stir it up, let the sand settle (the sand settles faster than debris particles and dust, then tip the bucket enough to slowly pour out the water while keeping the sand in it. Repeat until the water in the bucket is clear.

 

I would not wash sand indoors. The particles will clog your pipes.

 

I live in a condominium, indoors is my only option. I don't have a garden hose I can use. I don't even have a yard.

 

Depending on the color you want for white go with pool filter sand, for black use the Black Diamond medium grit from Tractor supply. If the sand particles get to fine it does make cleaning more difficult and the filter can suck up the sand easier causing impeller failure.
