Good brands of Goldfish foods? Question

  1. Goldie Fish Initiate Member

I just bought a new Fantail Goldfish and I'm a newbie on good brands of food to use for my new Goldfish. I been looking online for Goldfish food brands. I seen some interesting ones on Dr's Foster and Smith. What ones are good to use out of these brands?

    Feeding Suggestions:
For goldfish kept indoors, feed 2-4 times daily, provided water temperature is about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Please do not exceed the amount your fish will eat within a few minutes of feeding. Remove all remaining food after the feeding period to avoid over-feeding and the water quality problems associated with this action

    Hi there and welcome!

I've only been keeping fish for a few months but, in that time, I've experimented with several foods. In the ones you've listed above, I see a couple of fillers in the first three ingredients. Personally, I'm not a fan of fillers. They do virtually nothing in terms of providing nutrition.

I have personally had a lot of problems with Hikari food, even the Saki-Hikari which also has probiotics. It makes most of my goldfish floaty and constipated. It's a well-respected food by many but I've also spoken with others who have had similar experiences. All I can do is tell you mine.

I will say that I have never heard a bad thing said about the following three brands - Omega One, New Life Spectrum and Ken's Premium Fish Food.

Personally, I use New Life Spectrum. I feed the NLS Thera A 1mm pellets.

I've never tried Omega One or Ken's but it's only because I'm happy with the NLS, I've heard too many good things not to believe them. Maybe some other people who have tried these can tell you more about their experience with it.

It's also a good idea to expand your goldfish's diet. A balanced, high-quality, staple pellet food is important, but so is variety. There are lots of veggies and fruits you can feed your goldie, peas being among the most recognized because they help alleviate and prevent constipation/bloating/swim bladder issues. I also provide a variety of frozen foods a couple times a week as well - bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and Emerald Entree.

There are lots of fun ways to experiment with feeding your fish. Picking a staple pellet depends as much on the preference of the fish as it does the quality of the food.

    Good luck!
