Goldfish Stuck In Filter

I had just fed him last night and he was in excellent shape, I've had him for around 8 months now , I normally have a sponge on my filter so it can't technically suck my goldfish long tails if they swim by (it brings ease to my mind) , I had tooken out the sponge for just 2 nights to put it in my QT since I was treating another of my goldfish that was sick. I woke up this morning to find my goldfish tail all stuck in the filter , I turned off the filter to allow him to swim away which he did but he is very bruised, red streaking, having a hard time swimming and torn fins. What should I do to help him out?

Thanks in advance.

all water parameters are in check , 0 ,0 , 5-10ppm. Water temp is currently 70F.

I have seen others recommend stress coat or even melafix(I don't like it) for torn or damaged fins. But I think clean water is the best thing you can do. If you want to add stress coat it couldnt hurt.

That's what I was thinking just daily water changes and just make sure he doesn't get worst or any fungus ,I'll treat if any secondary infections come along. Thanks alot, I just like to be reasured.

Agree on extra water changes. It's amazing what clean water alone can do for fish without having to resort to meds.

Me too, I have a lack of confidence.

Is the filter you put on there cycled (i.e. did it have cycled media inside)?

Keep an eye on the red streaks. If they don't get better, they could be septicemia, which will need to be treated with meds.

If you use prime, it already has stress coat in it.

Edit: I would get another sponge for the intake.

Yep tank has been running for roughly 2 years as well as filters , I have 2 aquaclear 110 running on my 75g.

It appears that it was caused from the filter, it's been several hours since he has been free and the redness has dramatically reduced.

Never mind , I spoke to soon. He isn't doing to well , he isn't very active and staying at the bottom with claimped fins. He is breathing, he doesn't have any red streaking, just ripped fins...Ive been doing daily 60% water changes, any other recommendations?

You can buy sponges that go over the filter intake, kinda like how a sponge filter works but you can still have the power of a HOB filter if you're worried about this happening again ):

Any recommendations ? Been 2-3 days he hasn't gotten up from the bottom , only comes up for feeding , he constantly stays at the bottom with claimped fins?

EDIT: tried feeding , he didn't come up. I tried putting my hand inside the aquarium to see if everything was okay and he can't swim , he sinks backs down and now he is on his side and doesn't want to move , but still breathing. Should I put him in a QT and bring up the temp to 78F and treat with meds?

I think at this point it's at least worth a try. He may have sustained internal injury in the filter. poor lil guy. I'm so sorry this happened.

Poor guy, I say definitely worth a shot.

Any reason you want to heat him to 78?

I wonder if he was ill to begin with ... healthy fish keep away from the filter - don't get their tails stuck.
Was this fish in the same tank as the other one you lost?
The red streaking in tail indicates bacterial septicemia. I would treat with kanamycin.
No, in this case, don't turn up the heat.

Unfortunately he didn't make it through the night. I've been having such terrible luck lately with my goldfish , Ive lost 4 goldfish in the last very few months(2 of them in the last week) , with so many tanks that I have , all my other fish are doing good (knock on wood).
