Goldfish Missing A Scale

Looks like one of my oranda is missing a scale on his side. I'm thinking it happened from him rubbing up against a rock I have weighing down my airstone, I sanded it down before I put it in, but I think the edges may still a little too rough. Should I be adding melafix/aquarium salt or something to prevent infection or should I just keep an eye on it?
The tank contains 2 oranda, one nerite snail, and an unknown number of cherry shrimp. (1-3, I thought my fish may have eaten them all but I just happened to see one about 20 minutes ago)

Most of the time it is best to just keep a close eye on the fish to make sure it is just a missing scale. Personally I wouldn't add either salt or any kind of medication unless you see any changes other than a missing scale.

When in doubt a water change a bit more often than usual is always a good idea.

I noticed as I was doing my weekly water change, I will step it up a little bit while I watch for its healing.

Hello What...

I keep a lot of Goldfish, both the standard kind and the fancies and I wouldn't fret over the loss of a scale. I have one that lost a scale, likely from racing around the tank and it's fine. As long as you're keeping the tank water extra clean with large, frequent water changes, the fish should be fine. I recommend the use of standard aquarium salt, especially with species with scales. I dose a healthy teaspoon full in every 5 gallons of treated tap water. The salt will heal the wound and a trace of salt in the water discourages the growth of parasites and anything else that might produce an infection. Keep the medications out of the water!

I am pretty sure it will grow back and be okay. I have a Black Moor goldfish that lost a scale and it grew back within a couple of weeks. Same fish lost another and it quickly grew back. If your fish is healthy, it will most likely grow back quickly.

when I had goldfish I saw missing scales every once in awhile, I don't think its a huge issue, they grow back in about a week. Just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get infected.
