Goldfish Eating Pleco Food

Hello, I have recently put a pleco in with my two fancy goldfish and raised the temperature to be appropriate for both of them. When I put the algae wafers for him to eat at night the goldfish end up finding the wafers and eat them whole with one gulp. How should I feed him? I’m afraid that I’m starving him because the goldfish are like little vacuums and leave nothing behind. Thanks.

Your goldfish are lacking in vegetables. You can sink a pleco sized tube or jar containing its food, then feed the goldfish some plant based goodies of their own as a distraction.

Either get larger wafers or switch to veggies. Another idea is to put the wafer directly into the pleco's cave, and if you don't have a cave then get one, they love caves.

You can also feed blanched veggie slices like zucchini, yellow squash, green beens, cucumber, etc. The pleco should be able to get to it before the goldfish tear it to shreds.

I’ll for sure pick up some veggies for him today. Thank you.

I only have lettuce at my house right now, would that work for today?? What kind of veggies do they like?

I tried several different veggies but mine pouts if he doesn't have his green zucchini. Your fish will thank you for giving them their veggies. I don't par boil their veggies. they get 'em raw.

Demeter gave a list. My goldfish like duckweed. I farm it for them. You may find Repashy Soylent Green to be popular. Or pieces of seaweed.

Toss in some duckweed 20 mins before feeding the pleco. Drop the water in the cave.

The goldfish will be too busy eating duckweed at the surface to smell the pleco fwafer.

Hello, I know I have posted this question before, but I need more help. I have tried distracting my fancy goldfish while I put shot sized glasses in with my plecos wafers in so they get food. My goldfish eat the plecos food and I’m afraid that the plecos aren’t getting anything to eat. My plecos are shy and require the lights off in order to find food. The goldfish still end up getting their food as one is small and swims in the glass and eats the wafers. I know they are the victims because there is lots of poo everywhere near the glass. I have also put some duckweed to distract the goldfish, but again, my plecos are shy and won’t eat until the lights are off. The goldfish ended up eating their zucchinI that night. I have some ideas for tonight but yours is also appreciated. Thank you.

Have you tried feeding the Pleco after the tank light has been off for a while? I would think if it were dark for a while, the goldfish would go into "fish sleep mode" and not really notice you putting food for the Pleco in the tank.

You could do a few things here.

1 Feed the Goldfish at one end of the tank and feed the wafers to the other end of the tank while they are distracted.

2 add in decore that the Goldfish cannot get into (caves, PVC tunnels, etc.) and feed the plecos in there still distracting the goldfish at the same time with food of their own

3 put a temp divider in place just before turning the lights out. and feed the placos right after the lights are out on their side.

4. feed them wafers on one side and the placos wafers on the other at the same time after lights out.
