Glofish bullying

Well it seems out of the 3 glofish I have one is being bullied.I have one electric green,red starfire and a suburst.Ive been noticing that anytime at feeding the red and green shoot up as soon i open the lid,and the sunburst used to but now is hesitant as the other two seem to dart or zip towards him to scare him away.The red one always seems to initiate the taunting and then if the orange one ventured out in the open,then the green who swims around like a boss darts at him also.Meanwhile my pleco is so oblivious to everything just goes about eating or grazing or whatever.The orange one does eat but always seems to get scraps and whenever the orange one seems to try relax in its spot..bam here comes the red one taunting at him.Once this fish in cycling is done i plan to stock up with some at 3 more glofish to even up them and maybe some corys.Seeing how I have a 20 gallon long and i plan on upgrading but not at the moment so hopefully my pleco doesn't get too big for this tank to fast.He is already about 4 or 5 inches.So any suggestions or tips lemme know I'll greatly appreciate thanks.

 

Try adding in more decor. How close are you to the end of the cycle?

The red one likely thinks the orange one is in his space and is chasing him away from where he forages for food; they don't fully know that food will always be available and there will always be enough for all of them.

I agree with part of this but I feel like this behavior is more stress related (vs. food related) than anything else. Im guessing they have the skirt tetra type of glo fish and they can be aggressive when they’re not in a proper school or stressed out. Which, I’m guessing both is happening because they only have 3.

I’d say your close enough you could probably add in 1-2 more tetras

 

I agree with part of this but I feel like this behavior is more stress related (vs. food related) than anything else. Im guessing they have the skirt tetra type of glo fish and they can be aggressive when they’re not in a proper school or stressed out. Which, I’m guessing both is happening because they only have 3.

yes i was going to even out so itll be 6 glofish(2 green,2red,2orange).As much i wanna add more fish,I figure wait until that ammonia drops to 0.

Sounds good. If you start seeing the bullying get worse I think you could get 1 more but waiting until the ammonia at 0 is a good idea.

 

Goodday everyone and yes just as the thread says...Ive posted already in regards to my glofish bullying,but last night I witnessed two of the three as the attackers.I have the 3 glofish for now (green,red and sunburst orange)until i begin some stocking.It seems the green and red glofish are nipping at and chasing the orange glofish.Once this tank has fully cycled i will stock first with at least 3 more glofish to pair with the current ones.I am not sure why these glofish are acting this way..i originally thought maybe stress could be a factor but not sure because it has become so consistent with agitating behavior.If anyone has any ideas or suggestions send them pls..

What type of fish is it? Sounds like tiger barbs to me but they make so many species in those colors now, I'm not sure what you have or what size tank, water parameters ect.

hi Mandy the red starfire is the only short fin out of the glofish,(electric green,red starfire,sunburst orange)and a pleco for now until my tank cycles.I have a 20gallon long..I havent checked the waters yet,I did a big water change yesterday.But prior to the change my ammonia was a bit high .5,nitrites were 0,and nitrates were 10.Im in the 4th week fish in cycling.Once cycled I will stocking but slowly.I know I will have to upgrade soon again due to my common pleco growth.

 

The thing is "glofish" is a tradename. The company that produces them has taken several species and genetically modified them. These are glo-tetras, based off of black skirt tetras.

Tetras bicker among each other all the time, but except a bit of chasing and nipping usually nothing bad happens. With a bigger group this usually gets better. And yes, very likely they are stressed, as the lighting is not good for them and the tank has little to no cover. They maybe GMOs, but they still need the same care as the normal black skirt tetras.

I usually have the light on very minimal and yes i will def add more cover for them(plants).Thankyou

 

It's not about minimal lighting, the blacklight is irritating to many fish. Normal, white light would be good for them.

oh ok so the flourescent white light then ,cause I also have that atinic lighting..so only the flourescent white light will be sui

This is something called "natural behaviour" though it is might feel strange to speak about natural in case of Glofish

No, sorry, Glofish are illegal in my country, so I go by what I know from the original fish species.

 

I have goldfish that would nip each other like its a dog fight, I resolved the problem by A. Giving more room, I moved them to a 36 gal bow front with different fish and B. If there are low numbers of them then they will be stressed and develop a dictator hierarchy (not the good kind).

It might but you’re close enough to the end that I think water changes should keep the ammonia under control.
