omg, the one i just did for my 10g was sketchy. i was worried i'd cut myself too.

I ended up doing it on my bed, so the glass was on a soft surface that i could push on. then slowly get just one side on, then i had to pry the plastic open with my fingers and push onto the glass one tiny bit at a time. took forever, (like a few minutes, but it felt like forever.)

DIAGRAM IS PERFECT!!

thats how i did it.

Tried that no go

Enlist helpers. Don't cut yourself trying. AND DON'T USE TOOLS, you'll chip or break the glass and that's not good. I'm notorious for looking dangerous with tasks like this

Yikes! I got nothing lol sorry. Maybe try the hair dryer thing? But I would think if the hot water didn't help the hair dryer probably won't either. This one is a challenge!

Alternatively you can buy sheets of acrylic from any hardware store that are super easy to cut. I made like 3 threads about finding a better lid and then someone randomly mentioned that lol

My first 4 foot long took forever and was a struggle. But, the second one I did about a month ago just would not go on. Neither hot water or hair blower did anything , so....out of desperation I laid it on the counter on top of a plush towel and put one end in the proper position and tapped a wooden block with a wooden mallett...it was finished in a few minutes. Just use gentle taps, and move towards the other end. Hope that helps you.

I want to say on my 55g I used silicone oil to get it on. Vegetable oil worked like a charm. Glass 1 Thumb 0. Just had to get one jab in there for good measure.

Now its really too bad that lids say they fit on a 5.5 but really do not. Just a micron too big on the side.

I had that happen on my 37, I can't fit the standard glass lid on it. So I just use the crappy hood that came with it. I'm too lazy to make a custom one.

Oh life hack time. I don't have any pictures with me but I found if you reverse the white/clear plastic part that comes with the versa top, and notch the outside corners so it sits with the ribs down ward it will pressure itself up again the tank vs the glass. Then since that's where I cut holes and stuff for power, air, water lines etc, I can leave it on the tank while I clean the glass.

I also found I only need about an inch and a half of the ugly brown hinge on each side so more light gets through and there's less fogging (on 29 and 20 longs, do 5s have the hinge?)

Yes there is a hinge how do you get it off?

I soak my second hand lids in hot bath tub water with a little dish soap. Usually they will behave for me that way.

If it's just the plastic piece that's too big to clear the tank trim, I notch mine with a good sharp pair of wire cutters (while they are removed from the glass).

It seems the hinge is just a tad too big.

Does anyone have a source for the middle hinge that holds the two pieces together?

Sorry... I wasn't trying to overtake the thread.

I love them. AFTER they're set up. They are a royal pain to put on.

I have a ten gallon that I have been wanting to replace the light with. I want a topless aquarium, but, don’t want my fish to jump out. I have been looking into it but have been struggling to find a lid that will fit it. Can anyone help if your not busy?

The 10 gallon aquaculture (Walmart right?) will fit a 10 gallon glass lid from aqueon.

You can get a cheap lid diy with a sheet of polycarboacrylate (acrylic) and a razor blade to cut it
