Gimpy Guppies

I have 2 female guppies that look like how I feel!
Not sure what's wrong with them... is it contagious? Is it genetic? Is it scoliosis?! My guppies breed so I would like to know if I need to remove them.

Hi, Gillian! Welcome to Fishlore!

I'm guessing they've been like this and it wasn't sudden? If so, I'd pull them from your breeding stock. If it was sudden, there may be something we need to look into more.

It's just been over the last month or so I've notice the big one and I can't remember if the little one was born that way or not

I would definitely remove those two. You don't want them in your breeding stock if it's genetic. If it's something else, you don't want that either.

Keep an eye on everyone else.

When you remove them, look them over really well for anything else that might be on them that isn't easy to spot when they're swimming around the tank.

Make sure all your water parameters stay good (with guppies, I also check ph and hardness), temp stays good, you're feeding a varied and quality diet, and keep a watchful eye!

My gut reaction with deformed guppies is genetic especially when there are absolutely no other symptoms.

Sorry about these two. I'm sure you know it can happen with guppies. Hopefully you'll have lots of beautiful babies! (I guess since it's guppies I don't have to "hope" LOL)

Alright so they are both females. I don't see anything abnormal other than their shape but I also don't really know why I would be looking for....

I can't really see their fins or eyes well in the pics. I don't see any sores or scale loss. If there is, please say.

Have they been eating well? Hanging out at the surface (in the pics they're at the surface, but we know how guppies are when they think they're going to be fed!)?

Please don't freak out at this thought, but I just want to see if we can make sure it isn't fish TB, and I can't see great details in the pics. I'll ask Gypsy13 what you need to watch for just to be on the safe side. I really do think it's just deformity, but she will know all the right questions to ask you! I tend to be overly cautious!

----

Gypsy, all I can really see is an S shape curve in them. The S is looking at them from the side.

I'm about to do a few end of day tasks. If I'm not on when Gyspy arrives, she may need a better description from you with exactly what you see on the guppies. She's blind, but she knows her stuff! If I'm on, I'll do my best to describe what I see better than the short description I put above, but I'm not sure what else to add to that description!!

Hi, Gillian! I was hoping Gypsy would have the chance to jump in and give some insight on what to look for or ask if certain things have been occurring in your guppy colony. Until she has the opportunity, take a look at this:
Fish Tuberculosis
Here's a screenshot of some symptoms it says can appear:

See if any of these things have occurred or are occurring in the tank.

Thanks Aqua! Nothing like that

So good to hear!! Besides genetics, another reason for spine deformity can be nutrition. But since you've had guppies for so long, I don't think that's it, either. There are other things that can cause the spine deformity, but I keep coming back to genetics when I look at your pics.
