Gill Flukes Por Something Else?

Hi

I recently got a few small Goldfish which I have in a cycled quarantine tank. They have been acting normal for the most part for the first two days. However, yesterday I noticed early signs of Ich on two of them and I immediately treated with Seachem Paraguard with the recommended dosage for my QT tank. Unfortunately, 24 hours later I came home to one Goldfish breathing very heavily, darting around the tank, and then he would suddenly go limp while still very labored breathing. He was not one of the fish that had signs of Ich. Being a Calico I could see his gills were very bright red and irritated. I checked water chemistry with my API kit and everything was good (zero) but still did a large water change. Still about an hour later he was dead.

Can someone explain what could possibly be going on? The rest of the Goldfish (including the ones with early signs of Ich) seem to be dealing with the medication OK.

What were the early signs of ick?
Usually its pretty bad before it even causes a problem. I think maybe you saw something else on your goldie, like a fluke or anchor worm or even (god forbid) a breeeding tubercule.

Whenever I got those smaller fancie goldies they usually end up dying out of the blue for no ovbious reason. Just gotta be big before they are strong. I don't know why they die out of the blue like that. maybe their body shape causes internal organ shutdown quickly like a heart attack lol

I think those tiny spots you see in the fins are more like a wound sometimes. Ick usually isn't that big.

One Goldfish is definitely infected with Ich. It has 4 white spots very small and bright exactly like a grain of salt and they are scattered thought-out tail fin, dorsal fin, and body.

The one that died and had trouble breathing did not show any symptoms of Ich but his gills looked very irritated.

It is very frustrating that I cannot find any fish stock locally that isn't full of parasites and diseases.

You might try ordering your goldfish online instead in the future. It's more expensive, but you have a much greater change of getting healthy fish. I would check East Coast Ranchu, Coast Gem USA, Dandy Orandas.

I hope your fish respond to treatment and get better soon. I'm not an expert on diagnosing illness so I'll leave that to other, more knowledgeable, people.

Galathiel. Thanks.

I have purchased online in the past with mixed results as well. I will not name the store but it was not Dandy Orandas. Some came sick, one had a visible genetic problem. None survived longer than a year or so. Meanwhile my very first PetSmart Ryukin mutt is still thriving in my 75 gallon after 4 years or so. I am concerned to lose a very expensive online fish since I've had lots of bad experiences in the past. But I'm probably preaching to the choir here

Formalin dip works better then paraguard for parasites any day of the week. And it kills external bacteria and worms too like gill flukes.....
