Giant gourami and angel fish

HI all,

I'm new to tropical fish keeping, yesterday I got my first fish 2 x guppies 1x silver shark 1x angelfish and 1x giant gourami, these fish are all quite small apart from the giant gourami whos a little bit bigger, the giant gourami seems to keep annoying my angelfish and the silver shark sometimes I was thinking of taking the giant gourami back along with the silver shark as just read up that it likes a bigger tank. Do the fish stores take back fish?, I was thinking about getting some more guppies to replace them.

Any suggestions?.

how big is ur tank? beacuse I have seen a giant gourami around 20 inches they grow absoulutley giant I would have it with silver dollars some bigger bala sharks bigger plecos and clown loaches because of the fact there bottom dwellers they won't get eaten in aroung an 300 litre maybe larger tank and yes fish shops do take fish back I do that all the time good idea replacing the giant gourami guppies are lovely I have 5 myslef wonderful fish males are beautiful not some much the females ;D Callum!

The shop owner said he will take them back, I will be taking back the giant gourami, angelfish and silver shark these fish are not for beginners!!, he said they where!, going to replace them with guppies as I love them.

If I had a bigger tank I would keep the 3 but for now guppies will be great.

good decisionI culdn't agrre with u more have fun and remember when u get a bigger tank u can have a big fish for example me I have a 70 gallon 280 litres and i'm having some big fish but my little tank have gupies lovely fish nayway good decision ;D Callum!

Back up the boat Ellis. You asked if a 21 gal tank needed an air pump, saying you were keeping guppies. You actually have several fish that don't fit a 5 gal tank at all!

My suggestion would be to read the section here in fishlore (link at the bottom of this page) that tells all about the need to have a fully cycled tank, for the health of your fish. Any discussion of the merits of buying an angle and gourami and shark at the same time, needs to be weighed from the view point that NONE of these fish should be placed in a 5 gal tank with other fish, and have no chance of survival in an uncycled tank. Before you stock a tank YOU need to do LOTS of research on the fish you want to keep. Only buy a fish after you research whether it will live and thrive in the tank you have on-hand, and only after it has completed the nitrogen cycle. The only way you will know the health of your tank is to purchase an appropriate test kit, like the API Master test kit, and test your water. A typical new tank will have ammonia readings of 1 or higher, nitrite above 0 and no nitrate.

Ammonia and nitrite are EXTREMELY toxic to fish. Any reading over 0 on these and you have to start water changes, if you are cycling with fish in your tank. Nitrate only starts coming up after the bacteria that convert the ammonia and nitrite into nitrate have started to establish themselves. Nitrate is still toxic to fish in amounts over 20, so anything over 10 also warrents water changes. Information on this and much more is available by clicking on the links at the bottom of this page.
