Ghost Shrimps Eating Newly Molted Ghost Shrimp

HI all,

Just want to put it out there. My ghost shrimps were eating a newly molted ghost shrimp alive! They were fighting over the poor soft shell shrimp.

I am not sure what to do to keep this from happening...

Thanks in advance for your advice.

It's not unusual for that to happen with crustaceans. I once had couple of marine hermit crabs and when one came out of it's shell to move to another one, the other crab quickly grabbed it and started eating it alive starting from the soft back end. You need to have good hiding places for newly molted shrimp to hide until their new shell hardens.

Are you 100% sure they were trying to eat it? Most if not all shrimp will mate after molting. The males will basically grab onto the freshly molted female and breed.

Yeah, they ate it. I watched the event for 30 minutes.

Well darn, ghost shrimp can be mean little buggers. I’ve had them eat guppies before but never each other.
