Ghost shrimp eating cherry shrimp?

I added cherry shrimps in my tank around a week ago and now I am watching one ghost shrimp eating a cherry shrimp?

Is this normal?
I'm not sure if the cherry died of natural causes or if the ghost shrimp killed it.
Is it ok to leave the cherry there?

I don't know how to catch the ghost shrimp since its carrying it around.

Will that cause an ammonia spike? It's eaten half of the cherry shrimp

The ghost is about and inch and the cherry is 1cm.

ghost shrimp will eat dead RCS but I don't think they will kill them but I'm not sure. Any decaying matter will increase ammonia so yes it will. personally I would leave it in for a while and if it wasn't eaten before I went to bed take it out

I've heard that ghosts will possible kill smaller shrimp. Hard to say if that's what happened here as the ghost could just be doing some clean up on a carcass but I don't personally keep them together to avoid this very issue.

Yeh, they will eat anything small enough for them to overpower. You can minimize it by having plenty of food for him, but the cherry shrimp population would grow to a point that he will start again.

I've seen a type of shrimp called macro. Something that is sold in under the ghost shrimp name. They can be slightly more aggressive and appearance wise they are the same as real ghost shrimp. Could that possibly be cause the cause of your ghost shrimp being aggressive? (if the ghost shrimp did infact kill the RCS)

I assume that your Ghost Shrimp is male (due to its small size. Females can get up to 2 inches). It's unlikely that your male Ghost Shrimp hunted your RCA as males, due to their small size are unlikely to prey on anything bigger than an inch. Female Ghost Shrimp are more of a threat; they are aggressive and they would dare to prey on anything of their size. I had an experience when a ghost shrimp ate my Neon Tetra; it actually grabbed it and start feasting. I experienced it twice, so I never wanted to keep ghost shrimps ever again!

"Will that cause an ammonia spike?"
That depends on the size of your tank and if that dead RCS laid there for a long time or if the Ghost shrimp will eat it again. If your tank is bigger than 10 gal, then it won't make much an impact on your bioload as your talking about a 1 cm shrimp half eaten.

Ghost shrimp can surprise you with how aggressive they are. One of mine was super nasty and killed anything it could catch. Snails, mainly. I had one eat a guppy, but I'm guessing the guppy was dead already. It was most likely the same shrimp, which is also dead now, because I haven't seen any murderous behavior in my current shrimp.

Hi! I'm in UK and I just have to say that..yes Ghost Shrimp are definitely carniverous and cannibalistic. I am relatively new to the shrimp keeping hobby (about 1 year) and have already fallen foul of the ghost shrimp menace. I have lost over £100 stocking my 20 litre with dwarf cherries, crystals and some other types (and also 2 tiny neon green rasboras in 1 particular tank). The ghosts were sold to me as 'yamatos' or 'amanos' and are very similar to these when they are very small. The ghosties grow really quickly and I have actually observed them eat perfectly healthy other tank inhabitants, nearly all my dwarf sp. and also the rasboras. I am very annoyed with the stores that sold me these ghosts, as they obviously either don't realise, or care about what has happened. In fact I am angry. I've had enough of so-called experts telling me that they 'must have been weak or dead' to fall prey. They were ALL perfectly healthy. If you are new to the hobby like I am - watch out, they are a real menace and should only be kept alone.

This. They are the Macrobrachium sp. iotherwise known as whisker shrimp. Some have long arms......

macrobrachium kills anything that is smaller and he can catch (even tetra's) amano shrimp (cardina japonica) eat only algae an what ever you throw at them that does not move.

there are many shrimp who are called ghost shrimp susch as the macrobranchium, cardina japonica and the african ghost shrimp. So always look for the latin name of animals/plants.

Keep the amano shrimo. They are the only shrimp that helps effectivly with suppresing the algae problems and they will search for flake's and plant material on the bottom. They stay pretty small the only problem is that they get intimidated easily so get a group as they tend to move in a group. They are absolutly great shrimp.

I always think it's best to pick one kind of shrimp and stick with it. That way you avoid, for the most part, issues with the shrimp going after smaller shrimp they think are food.

I haven't had any issues with my ghosties attacking anything in my tank. But the only other inhabitants are the betta and snails.
