30 Gallon Tank GH and KH newbie questions

InHouseFisherman

Ok, so I had a severe acid spike in my tank that killed most of my fish. I used alkaline buffer and now waiting on cloudiness to dissipate.
In the meantime it was recommended I test my GH and KH. I went to shop and picked up an API test kit for both.
My GH is about 3-4
My KH is 10
I do not know what this means.

other parameters:
Ammonia 0-0.25
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20-40ppm
PH is 7.4

What do these GH and KH numbers mean and should I adjust them or let them ride? I have never messed with these before and I simply don’t know.

Btw, this is a freshwater, planted, tropical community tank.

10dKH is a bunch. If you managed to crash your pH from there, you need to up your water change schedule or % of water changed.

What does your water from the tap measure?

Ok, tap water is GH 4 and KH 4
And upon rereading instructions I tested my aquarium wrong on GH.
Aquarium is GH 9 and KH 10
I wonder if this is because of the alkaline buffer I used? I changed 5 gal of 30 this morning. Should I change another 5 or even 10?

It is. Set the alkaline buffer to the side. With 4dKH from the tap, regular 50% water changes should be more than adequate
