Getting New Betta (possibly)

I recently had a betta pass away for no apparent reason. I would like to get another betta for the tank but am worried about possible contaminats in my well water that could have caused the problem. If anyone knows the best way to go about this that would be helpful.

Hi, and sorry for your loss. There are so many things that could have caused your poor betta to die. How long did you have him/her?

Can you give more info about your set up, tank size, temp, water changing routine, heater, filter, water additives?

I tested my water using the API test kit and saw nothing out of the ordinary. I would have to take my water to a local testing facility to test for anything else, the problem is there are so many things to test for and I have no clue what, and it can be expensive. Is there a way for me to link another thread about my sick betta if that would help?

I have another thread with all this info, how can I link that thread over here?

I will look for it. You can copy and paste the title of the link in a post here, and members will be able to go to that link and read.

What a beautiful little girl she was!!!! :emoji_cry:

After reading your other thread, I would have to say that I don't think something was wrong with the water, unless something harmful got into the tank some kind of way. She was fine for 4 weeks. If there was something really off, I would think it would have shown up almost right away. Even if something changed in water quality, I can't imagine it changing to that degree that it would affect her in that way, again, unless some type of poison got into her water by accident.

Your water maintenance is great. Your tank sounds perfect.

Ph for bettas just needs to be steady, so if it was 6.5 all the way to 8.0, it is fine, as long as it doesn't fluctuate (referring to what a member posted in the other thread).

If she was bloated, then that does not sound like a water issue. She ingested something that affected her negatively. Something could have scratched her mouth or the inside of her throat, and caused an issue. She could have come down with a possible case of a fast acting bacteria, like columnaris, which can kill a fish in a day. She was having breathing issues, so if she was bloated, too, then maybe her kidneys were shutting down. There are so many possibilities due to bettas being so over-bred now, that they tend to be genetically weak.

Truthfully, there is no way to know what she died from short of getting a necropsy done, and that is not feasible or cost effective.

I have terrible water where I live, so I actually use bottled spring water for my betta tank, but that can be a bit expensive. If well water changes a lot, and there is a way to test it for irregularities, you would end up spending a lot of money to get it tested constantly.

I say all of that to say this - if I were you, I would just get another betta (one very carefully chosen, of course), keep the set up that you have, and watch everything closely.

I hope this helps a little!!!!

Thank you so much for the response. She was quite the pretty fish, she came from a local breeder that gives to my LFS, I will be seeing if I can get in touch with them to ask if they've seen similar problems in their bettas, if the problem was genetics. My endler and cory tank shows no signs of similar illness so I do agree that there is probably nothing potent coming from the well. Joined this forum yesterday due to her illness, very helpful community that I am thankful for.

Welcome to forum! I am glad that you are finding it helpful. Sorry it's under the current circumstances. It is frustrating not to know exactly what went wrong. I have that experience, too. I hope you get some answers!

You are not suppose to use your sink water if you do you need to put water conditoner it ( you can find at your local pet store). I would clean the tank with vinegar and water. Then buy your pet stores water and make sure you give your Betta plenty of places to hide and put a few snails or plants in the water so it can breathe cleaner water.

Look at the thread I linked, those were not the problems.
