Getting Danio To Spawn?

Can I get danio to spawn in 1 ten gallon tank if I divided it into five gallon sides and removed the adults once the eggs have been laid? Because my dad said if I could get fry from them and start raising them in the spare 10 galon tank I have right now I would be able to get another 10 gallon tank to keep adults separate from fry and also have a grow out tank for the fry. And also how do I tell when the danio have laid eggs so I can take them out of the spawning tank? I was gonna breed celestial pearl danios because I wanted to make some money and they are like $8 a fish.

I have never breed fish, but I have looked into it. I think as long as the parents are unable to consume the fry/eggs, and they are not threatened by the filter, it might work. when you breed them, put a layer of marbels at the bottom, so the eggs can fall trough and avoid being consumed. some other more experienced people will come along and be able to give a more definite answer. if I were you, I would get the new tank ahead of time and breed them in that

IMO , the 10 gallon would be ok for the fry for some time, but not big enough for danio adults..they need more swim space....

I find breeding danios very much the same as breeding some barbs, I have bred odessa barbs succesfully.

Wait until a time your female is looking plump, then put her and a male into the divided side one evening, feed them once while they are in the divided side, turn the light off as normal. In the morning, make the room light by opening curtains or something, but don't put the aquarium light on, after 30 minutes to and hour put the aquarium light on, leave the adults in the tank with the light on for another 10-20 mins, then move them back to the otherside.

This is how I bred my barbs and it worked fine, no marbles or special equipment required. I will put some links to my barb breeding thread in a moment.

EDIT: Here are the links,

Would I be able to do this all in one 10 gallon tank (That is, before I buy a second tank like my dad said I could)??? And what do you feed the fry?

Errm, probably not, I keep my barbs in a group of 8 in my 72G and I only put 2 in my 15G to spawn. I don't think 10G is enough to do it to be honest .

A lot of people will suggest baby brine shrimp etc.. I didnt feed my barbs until they were about 10 days old (1 week of free swimming), for the 10 days they ate algae in the tank and all I fed them was crushed flake food

So I probably won't be able to breed fish?

You could try it, but as soon as you get fry, they will need a whole tank to themselves.

Well my dad said if I could get fry from the fish I could set up another tank, but I would need them to spawn first.... And I know I could breed live bearers but I wanted to make a bit of money off of it, and live bearers don't sell very well.

You probably won't get much more for your danios either, I would say its worth a shot as long as you are guarunteed another tank if they spawn.

Well the danios I want to breed are about $8 a piece on the net so a little bit more in LFS. I would probably make more of a profit then?

Oh, if they aren't common zebra danios, sure, but then your LFS may only give you store credit, so you won't actually get any cash.
Also, different species of danio may be harder to breed..

Hmm Yeah you have a point... I wanna breed Celestial Pearl Danios, and I've read they have the same breeding habits/requirements... But I can't really find any good guides on how to breed them! Here they are.

They look remarkably like a galaxy rasbora to me

Try researching that instead because they are the same fish.
