Getting a darker tannin water look

Random question, has anyone used hickory chunks used for smoking wood in their tanks to darken up the water? Do you think it would cause any problems?

Reading the labels, it's all chem free since it's intended for food use. I was soaking some the other day to put in the smoker and realized it gave off some great color in 24 hours.

I like the black water look and have all fish that would love it. I have other driftwood in there giving off a little tannin staining.

Thanks for the thoughts!

Nobody has had this thought or been curious? So what about hickory in a tank in general?

I guess oak is ok, so maybe oak chunks for some added tannins.

I recently moved the thread to the driftwood section. Hopefully it will help get some responses.

Hi, thanks Lucy! Where is the driftwood section? I haven't seen that.

Can you just use a light that makes it look like tannins are staining the water? Maybe an rgb led bulb that you can control the color

Yeah it's not just the color though, I like that the tannins soften it up a little, and people claim it's healthy for the right fish.

I'll have to just put some Malaysian in there. Right now it's just some really weathered driftwood oak, and some grapevine stuff from the LFS.

Ooh and probably should post a picture

In.South Africa Rooibos-tea (jungle tea) is used to stain the water. Will try that soon myself.

I don't know about hickory but alder cones if you can get them release a lot of tannins & stain the water quite quickly.

I haven't heard of that. I'll check it out. Sounds interesting. Post some pics of your tank before and after if it works like you want.

Thanks Coradee! I actually totally forgot about alder cones. I've heard those work well. Amazon time.
