You could try the ammonia sterilizing method... might be less work and just as effective then tearing the whole tank apart...

I'm so sorry that you lost him.. he knew a loving home with you and it really is hard to be sure what you were dealing with in that tank, but definitely it was an illness of some kind and in cases like that, I sterilize everything completely.
