Hi, good day!

I'm from the Philippines and I'm new to breeding rams. When is the best time to feed the fry? first day of swimming or 2nd,3rd day after free swimming?

I feed the fry after 24 hours of free swimming .

Thank you so much, cause I feed bbs on the first day of free-swimming, and half of them died

Yea they will not look like a really good Pitch Black till after 4 months .
They definitely darken as they age .
Sounds like you are doing great !
Coralbandit.......of the (8) Black Rams I got from Liz I have gotten (3) confirmed pairs. These of course came from you originally!! Do you think these are ones she raised out or was it the original stock she got? I didn't know when she got those off of you. When I bought them off of her.....she was saying these were the ones she hadn't used.

I am purchasing 2 pairs from Liz this week hopefully and intend to do a little breeding. I have bought from her 6 Albino BN's so I know she has excellent stock and the rams I am getting are from your line. I haven't seen any of your post in SimplyDiscus but ran in to this post and just wanted to chime in. I also have some GBR that are spawning.
Cheers Carlos
I use golden pearls 50 micron after they already know to hunt the BBS.
Usually around the end of 1 week .Then I mix the two to trick train them .
Golden pearls are great prepared food .
Were are you buying your 50 micron golden pearls?

I have no rams right now !!
I decided to take a breeding break in the spring .
May rearrange and re set up fish room now ,but all I have besides my 180 community is my discus and Ed Parker Jet Black swordtails ..
I plan on doing the blacks again .
I have blacks in my videos ;
I'm going to start breeding the black german rams in my area soon. I have some questions that weren't asked yet. Once they are hatched, say a week old, can you switch the soft water gradually to tap? What about the lighting? I know discus love the dark, do the rams prefer the dark also? Or what type of lighting do you use?

I breed both discus and rams........with my discus I usually have my water around 60 to 80 ppm, but with the rams I have bred them in tap water which is around 200 ppm. I just add methylene blue to the eggs after they lay. Shouldn't be a problem of switching to tap......I do that with my discus. I will do a 50% water change after the eggs have already darkened before the fry hatch out. I then do a 25% change each day for a number of days to get all the methylene blue out. That way by the time they go free swimming.....I'm back to normal tap water.
Black Ram pair with 100+ fry. This is the first attempt at letting them raise the fry.

Are you pulling the dish out dosing the MB and returning it to your tank or are you just dripping the MB inside the tank?

Keep us posted on your Rams

I switched water around 1-1 1/2 months .
I use beamsworks DAFSPEC with a dimmer but nothing crazy .
No lights out or darkness needed .
The fry need to see their food .
Good luck ~

The one month olds look good .
They could take all of 4 months to darken up and even then they may only be dark enough you know they darken further .
They look pretty dark .
That's a good batch of fry there .Looks over 50% dark . You can see the golds already .
The pair is behaving great ~!

I think it might be about 70% dark to 30% gold.....somewhere in there.

Are these true Pitch Black Rams? I see some advertised as Pitch Black at Myrtle Beach Discus that are not as dark. Also Jack Wattley Discus calls them Black German Rams and they are as dark. What was your strain called? I know Liz got them from you originally.
Discus Madness calls them Double Black German Rams.

In the beginning DM called them 'Black rams'
None here in the US were very dark .
Their source [ Shahar Danziger ] called them 'black rams' .
Marco in South Africa got his from Shahar and called them 'Black Knight rams'.
Mine came from Shahar and I created the name 'Pitch Black rams'.
The name came about because of exactly what you are seeing .
Customers would ask me " how dark are they?" and my response was Pitch Black !
I have threads here that document when I got them in 2017 .

Yes I been busy reading your old threads to try to get a background. You really put your mark on this line.

They are not going to be as happy as they could be with that white sand .
No sub or a darker sub would make them more comfy IMO .
I like the way you have the trays set and separated .

You recommend BB is better or dark substrate? I guess it's easier to go BB. I thought the liked the sand since they are diggers but I will take your suggestion since you have been doing this for a wile.

I will suck up the sand with my daily cleaning and water changes with my siphon. Maybe in 3 water changes I can get it all without to many disruptions.

I think you......like me.......probably got your stock through Liz which came from Coralbandit originally. What ratio of Black Rams to Golden Rams are you getting from the Black Ram pairings?? Also.....have you noticed any defects in the Golden Ram fry?

Charlyc
  • #70
It's not always the same but around 60% gold. No defects but at times I got some fry that wouldn't lose their yolk sac.

Some of the golds I'm getting are real colorful with orange eyes and some are a more paler yellow with a yellowish-white eye. You see anythign like that?

coralbandit
  • #72
I saw pale and beautiful golds!
I may have mixed a few different golds [ some long finned] in with the blacks.
My buddy in Hawaii hooked me up with some real nice golds and the LF golds I used.

It seems from where I left off that picking a pair that shoots mostly or completely black is a shot in the dark.
There are no visual cues of which one possess the double black gene.
