Geoff's Betta Tank

Just sliced a small hole in mine (I was curious) and ran it in a bucket, it seems it has SOME amount if suction (tested w/ my finger) but when I put a kink in it it started spraying water out through the hole.

Word of advice, take out the pump and clean the intake strainers and output nozzles every once in awhile, mine were NASTY.

Ended up doing a full water change cuz "hey since ive already got the buclets out let's clean the filter media"
"Hey since i've already gunked up the tank lets do a water change"

It looks like I have the temperature situation under control. I've had it steady at 82 degrees the last couple days without having to cut any holes in the output tube.

tyguy7760 and Namtab - Did/do you have issues with the water evaporating quickly in your Spec V? It's only been a week and the water level is down 3 inches already. I don't remember it evaporating that quickly when I had a Spec V a few years ago. Maybe I didn't have the temp as high back then. Does warm water evaporate more quickly?

Yes I had a similar issue with mine. Sometimes I'd have to top off in between water changes

I do notice more evaporation than "normal" but considering I'm doing water changes 2x per week it hasnt become an issue (tank is temporarily overstocked.)

The little guy is getting big! It's only been a little over 2 weeks. Here's a picture of when I got him on 6/9 and a picture from tonight.

Thanks! I hadn't realized how much he's changed in two weeks until I looked back at his pictures. His coloring really came in good!

Big changes for the betta today. I have to put him in a new tank. The 5 gallon Spec V wasn't cutting it anymore. I have soft water and need to use crushed coral to buffer my pH. The filtration design of the Spec V wasn't allowing the coral to dissolve and disperse throughout the tank enough, I guess. I initially had the pump on the lowest setting with a prefilter over the output nozzle so the betta wouldn't be thrown around the tank. When my pH started going wonky, I removed the prefilter and changed the positioning of the coral to try to allow for it to disperse. I thought I had it figured out because my pH was stable for 2 weeks, but now it's falling again. It's not falling as fast as it did initially, but enough to make me want to change everything up.

So the baby (teen now, maybe?) betta is getting an upgrade! Today I set up a 10 gallon for him. It's planted just like the Spec V, but now he's got some cave decor to explore and hang out in. I haven't moved him over yet, I'm waiting for the sand to settle and the temperature to stabilize. I moved the bag of coral to the new filter (Aquaclear) and I expect it to work just fine. I have it set up exactly like my 10 gallon shrimp tank and that's had stable pH for a year.

Fingers crossed!

Will do!

I'll probably be putting him in within the hour.

He's been in the new tank for about an hour. I put in a couple nerites from my 36g. He hasn't noticed them yet. Hopefully he doesn't become a jerk.

Here's a picture!

Looks like such a great home for him! Bet he is loving it. I like the way you planted it. Is it mostly anubius? Is that an Amazon sword on the left?

Hope he does well with the snails! I'm thinking of trying a snail in my son's 10-gallon betta tank.

Thanks! He seems to like it so far.

I have 3 anubias and 2 amazon swords in the tank. The big anubias in the middle and the big sword in the rear right corner behind the caves are both holdovers from the 5g. The 2 anubias glued to the caves and the sword on the left are all new.

I haven't seen him go into any of the caves yet! I thought he'd love them. Then again, I'm not watching 24/7, but I hoped to have seen him do some exploring by now.

It’s been so long since I’ve updated any of tank threads. Everything’s been moving along so smoothly, that I’ve just been coasting along and not really having anything to post about.

The last time you all saw my betta, he was just a little baby. Now look who’s all growed up!

Thanks! The tank had a few more plants in there, a couple amazon swords. But then it got overrun by algae. Two weekends ago, I pulled out the swords and gave the tank a good cleaning. Now I just have the two anubias. I kinda like how the tank looks even though it’s sparsely planted now.

My daughter wanted me to get a betta to add to our aquarium because she thinks "they're pretty fish" Obvoiusly they need to be by themselves and don't mix with a community. Planning on setting her up with a small 5 gal tank for her bedroom and a betta.
Do you think 5 gal is too much for this fish, considering it can live in a soup bowl just about?

5 gallon is the minimum i'd keep it in. the industry likes us to believe they can live in a soup bowl because it makes us feel better about seeing them in those little containers and it makes them more accessible to buy. But 5 gallons is really what they should be kept in. Just make sure whatever filter you use doesn't create a ton of surface agitation
