General questions

Hi guys! I just had some general questions if anyone could help me out that would be greatly Appreciated :) I’ll put in some pictures too.
So after doing some research I learned that this white jelly stuff will eventually go away on its own but I’ve only ever heard of it growing in driftwood. There are two spots in my tank where it seems to be growing on the rocks itself. Anyone know why?
Secondly, I have these pogostemon helferi that I planted yesterday (well… “planted”) and today they seem kind of… sad? I sort of just pushed them into the gravel as best I can. But yeah, I also put in two seachem root tabs in the spots I planted them in. One tab for each section.
And lastly, my tanks cycle. I understand that it normally takes 4-8 weeks for a tanks cycle to be well established. But I’ve had these occurrences happened twice now where I show signs of nitrite and nitrate and the. The next day both go down to 0. Is something wrong ff about my cycle? Or does something like this sound like a normal situation lol. Thanks guys!

Also! It looks like i'll have to do a fish in cycle and someone had recommended that I should use seachem Prime for that because not only does it remove chlorine and chloramine, it also binds small amounts of ammonia and nitrite to make the water safe. If i do a water test after adding seachem prime, will it show lower levels of ammonia or it will not affect the water test? For example, if I had 1ppm ammonia and then I add seachem prime, will the next water test after that show lower than that? Thanks!

1st it is probably a chunk of fungasing food.

2nd Flourish tabs never worked for me.....Plants are hit or miss sometimes.

How long has the tank been running?

Prime wont do anything to your test results.

1.) I have put no food inside the tank as there is no betta yet. just the two root tabs for the pogostemon.
2.) tanks been running for 6-7 days

The slime on your driftwood can sometimes float off and land somewhere else. Trust me I know I've had many attempts trying to remove the stuff and then it gets everywhere. It will most likely go away on its own along with all the other bacteria/slime on your driftwood.

The white fungus on the driftwood is normal. I dont really see it growing on the rocks as much as I see it growing out from the driftwood. You can take it out by hand, with a toothbrush, etc., no worries.

Your Downoi will do that (as will most plants). If you bought it as a culture, its never been in the water and it needs to adjust. Some plants melt a LOT and look dead before growing. Dont worry for now.

Lastly, your cycle. A true cycle usually takes about 2 months from start to finish, and thats dosing pure ammonia every day. If you have fish already, youll REALLY need to keep an eye on parameters, dont overfeed and be ready to do daily water changes for a few weeks. It can be done, but safely for the fish is a lot of work.

Good luck with the tank.

Just did a 50-55 percent water change because im pretty sure my betta arrives tomorrow. Ill definitely keep the ammonia and nitrite levels at most at 0.25ppm so that I don't hurt the fish. I also dosed the aquarium's new water with prime. Ill post results in a couple hours to give the tank time to cycle and mix the water up as best it can.

Also you mention Downoi? I am not sure what that is but it sounds like a delicious root vegetable.

Pogostemon helferi is commonly called Downoi, or Little Star.
