Gender changes

Ive had a female marigold sword and a female 24 karat gold mollie change to males
How is this possible?

were they fry?

 

Many marine fishes will change gender, usually from female to male, to prevent the "family" from dying out since, in many cases, there will only be one male in a single harem. Maybe that happens in freshies too.

 

Before and after pictures would help, or pictures of any sort, really.

 

actually both have died. It happened a while back they got old
we bought them at he store as adults
the mollie actually had fry and then changed to a male
the sword was noticed when he started getting a spike
