For me I like the Eheim filters because of there quality of materials and build quality. They are super quite and easy to clean. The Aqua Clear filters are also excellant very easy to use and real easy to clean. I only know 1 person who had a FX5 and his only complaint was cleaning it. It did a good job filtering but he said it was a bit noisy. They are all good filters and sometimes a hard decesion on which to buy.

I run a fx5 on a 75 gal goldfish tank. It does a great job of sucking up all the poop, keeps the water nice and clear. I'm deaf so I can't speak to how noisy or is or not, but it is a PIA to clean. Have to drag it to the bath or outside so it doesn't explode the water everywhere when I open it. The little drain plug on the bottom also leaks when I try to drain it before moving it, but that may just be my filter.

I have 2 Eheim 2217s, but heard so much good stuff about the FX5 and seen them used so often that I want to try one. Have no real qualms about the Eheims, kind of wish they pushed a bit more water than they do....otherwise its a simple canister.

For the record I find ALL canisters a PITA to clean.
