I'm new to aquariums. I have a 38 gallon tank wi an aquaeon quiet 55 gallon filter. When I started this tank I had very hard water. Since then I have gotten a soft water system and even reverse osmosis for my home (not for the tank.) I am still getting hard water readings for my tank even though I've been doing 20% changes at least on a weekly basis. Any suggestions?

Also my filter cartridge has a rust color to it. Should I change it? Or is it fine? My tank has cycled.

What are the readings out of the tap?

If you change your filter cartridge, make sure to seed a new one first for at least two weeks (I usually provide a month for seeding to be safe). Have you cleaned the cartridge in dechlorinated water to see if the rust color comes off?

It will take a few more water changes. Something is dissolving in your tank. Eventually it will settle out. The rust color is normal. I've had it before and it's not an issue.
