frilly gills?

I know I'm getting paranoid about these fish, but I don't think that Robin (our ryukin) has always had a frilly edge to her gill cover? looks like a translucent membrane extending from the edge of the cover and sort of flapping. It stretches far enough back that when her gill is closed it overlays the joint of her pectoral fins.

I've changed the water since I noticed it, in fact I noticed it while I was doing the change. No params atm as the tank has prime in it.

She and Comet (a shubunkin) are still struggling with the higher tank temps, although not as as much as previously since the weather has deteriorated here, as discussed here:

HI octonaut, hopefully someone can help you today.

If you could post a photo, it may help members to identify any (potential) issue.

Thanks Ryan, I'll give it a go, but I've only got the (rather poor) camera on my phone as I've lost the charger for my DSLR.

Robin, pose for the camera now....

Getting the perimeters is most important with water changes. They always perk fishies up. If the temps are too high, smaller cooler water changes every day can help that Adding an extra air stone too will do the trick! I hope everyone perks up soon!

Water parameters are pretty good (I'll be changing the water later this afternoon and it's 0,0,30). I've been changing 80% water at least twice a week and mostly every 2 days. I've added 2 airstones as well. Temp is slowly dropping, its now 24 instead of 26 in the tank, but there's more hot weather to come. I've tried ice to reduce the temp and big ice packs and it doens't seem to make much odds. I just don't know what that flap around the gills is and whether its normal or not. the two shubunkins don't have it.

I think I gave her a heart attack the other day. She was sitting next to the filter (not hanging out there, just where she happened to be) when I switched it on. She jumped, launched herslf accross the tank and crashed down on the gravel on her face and lay there not moving until I prodded her. I'm thinking this isn't good.

Is the "frill" transparent? Is it stiff like a scale or more flexible like a membrane? Does it look like it is coming from the outside of her gill cover or from inside her gill? Does she have it on both sides or just one?

Lots of questions, but hopefully the answers will help us narrow down a bit. A picture would be helpful - bring her over and I'll take a picture for you .

be there in a minute...

I'll post a picture when I can work out how to get it off my phone and into my computer. I'm getting old

The frill is a soft flexible membrane, it's translucent orange (about the same shade as her scales) extending from just under the gill cover on both sides. As she moves her gill covers to breathe it flaps, sometimes curling over a little. It's quite long, maybe a 1/3 inch, and it overlays the joint between her body and her pectoral fins.

edit: Googling it just brings up flaring bettas.....

EDIT: got the picture! only took 2 days from my phone to my computer, stupid google!!
