Friend, recommendations for betta tank

Ok, so I have this friend who has a betta. Sound good so far? Well it is in a 1/2 gal tank that 'is made specifically for bettas" so it must be ok. She just told me that she hasn't changed the water in 3 months! (she said that she'd do it today). She will be getting more 'stuff' for him when they move across country in 3 months. I'm not expecting him to survive the move b/c they are moving half way across the country and driving.
I want to recommend a bigger tank, heater and filter for her. It has to fit on her dresser. She said that she would be getting a bigger tank, a one gallon one! I recommended a 3 gal, she seemed reluctant. Any recommendations for a tank, heater and filter? I was thinking an azoo filter, EHIME jager 25w heater and a 3 gal tank. Sound good?
Any recommendations for an all in one kit? Thanks
How about this?
Also: Thanks for letting me vent.

Almost any tank bigger than 3 gallons is good for bettas, but the betta flow looks nice.

That's what I thought. I'm better with marine tanks (I know more than I should) that bettas so I asked here.

Yep, 0.5 gallons! Depressing, I know. Those size tanks should be outlawed. But 'it was made for bettas' so it must be fine!

Jeez that no better than those poor cups ! I hope she gets him at least a plastic 3.5gal?? At least ! Oh my.

If she can't do an 5gal or 10gal aquarium, then she should at least get a 3.5gal tank that comes with a filter & heater . They have 3.5gal tank bundles for around $40 . Just keep educating her on bettas and how no fish could live in a .5! I hope that poor guy gets an actual home

I have a tall 3.5 gal comes with a filter and I have a minI heater in it
Works good.

I have this one.

Its got a smaller footprint so itll fit more on her dresser. The filter is very very gentle so great for a betta.

I use this heater for both of my betta tanks.

And Franklin in the tank...

Only complaint I have is the LED light it has is a colour change one... you can set it to one colour or let it rotate colours... I try to keep it on a more natural colour that I can because plants. But guessing your friend doesn't do plants...

If she wants plants, marimo moss balls and java ferns would do good.

Ok, thanks. She obviously knows nothing about the nitrogen cycle so she'd either never change the filter media or change it out and restart the cycle every time. <sigh>

Well unless you can give her the stuff she doesn't need to change out, there's not much you can do about that

Tell her a 10 gallon tank is $10 at petco dollar per gallon sale. You can get a heater, filter, and light for that for the price of a 5 gallon kit. Absolutely dirt cheap. I think I could set up a 10 gallon betta tank for $30-40. plus she could put a divider down the middle and keep 2 bettas. sounds like a steal to me.

The problem is she doesn't want anything bigger than a 1 gallon ! Even if she has the room.....

Yeah, it has to fit on her dresser. I'll ask for a pic next time I talk to her.

I once posted a video on tiktok in which I vaguely basically mention that the 0.5 gal “tank” I bought for a snail (temp housing for a week dw) isn’t suitable for bettas, and everyone in the comments was like “BuT iT sAyS iTs FoR bEtTaS” and I just ugh. No. Companies lie to make a buck - they don’t care lol

That was unusual spelling.
I dO iT tOo. iT's mEaNt tO iMiTaTe mUlTiPle vOiCe cRaCks. iT's rEaL fUnNy.

At every irregular capitalized letter is a voice crack.

You suggested a marineland portrait. The thread is about tankmates. Snails. Am I missing something? I think I'm caught up.

Do you think that some amano shrimp would be good tank mates? It it probably not lone enough for a microrasbora huh.

Some photo shop and you could talk them into a 55 gallon "betta" tank.

FinalFins
  • #21
Well it comes with a filter and light and lid so you just need a small heater and that can easily fit into the refugium.

Amano shrimp would be ok but bettas can get aggressive with them.

My betta is with two amano shrimp and they all ignore each other

How about a longer 6.8 gal tank with a shola of microrasboras and amano shrimp?

Usually tanks that size are squarish so they have a poor footprint so to me that sounds crowded.

Yeah, it's squarish. ~14 in by ~14 in.

What species of boraras were you looking at?

If your looking for a tank that still has more possiblilies look into either a portrait tank or the mythical 12 gallon long.

14 by 14 isn't that bad IMO, only 4 square inches off the 10 gallon leader. Could do a school of 5 ember tetras... but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Are we still talking with a betta in the tank too?

Chillis
or
Kubotai

Yes, she already has the betta

In that case the betta would be better off by itself.

I set a couple pieces of computer paper on the floor for reference. Its smaller then I would go but to each their own.

My old betta passed away after 3 years in a Marineland tank. I still use it as a nano - I tossed a few endlers in there just so it's not as empty (I was very sad when he passed away). I like it because the back of it has a recess where you can put the heater, and the light it comes with is actually fairly decent for an aquarium kit.

He ate every shrimp I tossed in there, and so dunno if I'd put any in there hah. So I'm gonna say probably no friends for him in there - bettas are perfectly happy by themselves.

She didn't change the water for 3 months. I don't think I would suggest any other poor creature(s) to put with the betta!

I would revisit this topic in a few months once she learns how to properly care for an aquarium. Shrimp would never survive poor water conditions so at this point it would be throwing money away.

I'll have to teach her. She has lots to learn!

I know. I'm, um, working on her…………...
