Freshwater Stingrays Pa

How about Pennsylvania banned stingrays in the local fish trade?????
I went back to a fish shop I hadn't been to in about a year and their rays were gone. When I asked about the ray they told me PA put in a new law that banned the sale of them!
I gotta tell you this bummed me out so much. I have had a dream of owning one of those beautiful creatures for years. I got the plans drawn up for a 400 gallon short tank and everything. The shop owners said the state banned them due to finding one in a river somewhere. What! I got natural gas and nuclear plants spewing trash into the rivers over in western PA but if we find a stingray oh we gotta ban them?

I'm not sure if this should be posted here just trying to create a conversation about this.

I wish Is it just the sale of them that’s banned? If so, wouldn’t you be able to go out of state and buy one?

It’s a shame someone’s stupidity and lack of care for others caused a law like that to be made. I have to imagine there was more than one though, typically they don’t ban a species unless the risk of it becoming invasive is to high. Goldfish for example are in waters just about everywhere but have not been banned. Perhaps that’s because they can hybridnise.

I do wish that instead of making laws like this, they would make laws where you need a special permit to buy or sell the fish. This way it could weed out some of the foolish people buying them and likely help them get into better environments.

Yeah, they're banned in GA too. At least we can still have salt water rays, right?
I think ferrets were banned here for a while too (I think they still should be, I've seen a wild domesticated one, those things kill a lot of birds). And mosquito fish, which is a bummer, because I really wanted some for my pond.
But yeah, I do feel your pain man.

Shop keep said it's illegal to keep them in the home too.
I know there was probably good reason for the ban, but they could have waited until after I had one already.
When there's a will there's a way! I'm sure there's a shop/breeder in Ohio I could smuggle a ray from. The day a swat team breaks down my door to get to my fish is the day I'm moving to Canada.
Ferrets....I'll never understand. I saw one person who walked there's on a leash down the street.

hmm... if you are really serious about getting one I'd look into the law and see about any loopholes. Maybe even get a lawyer to look it over if you really want a ray.

hey, ferrets are cool. They are long, wiggly, furry, little predators. Very playful as well. But yes, I do not get why people are so foolish and selfish as to just dump these predators in the wild, effectively messing with the system there.

They are terrifying when you catch one in your headlights going down the road, or just seeing them in the woods
They looks like creepy, tailess, elongated squirrels to me, lol.

I tried to find information regarding the law on the pa fish and boat commission website. I have't found them specifically banned on the lists of illegal aquatic animals. They're also not listed as an invasive species at least in PA. Huh...interesting. These websites are hard to sift through since a lot of information isn't clearly laid out. I'll have to talk to the shop keep some more and see who told him he couldn't sell them.
