    Just started
My local PetLand has clean tanks. Never seen a dead fish, and the only crowded ones are their feeder comet tank which I guess is expected :/ Their betta cups are sad, but usually clean looking. When I bought my newest boy there he and one other had really bad water, but they were the exception. I honestly think they just got missed by accident.

Infact the only other thing I've ever seen them doing wrong was putting their mystery snails in the tank with puffers, lol. They move their snails tank to tank to deal with the algae growth, and I guess someone didn't know better and tossed 'em in there. I told the gal on duty that her snails were getting eaten, and she moved them out.

My Wal-mart doesn't sell fish. I almost wish they did so I could go harrass them for a job

I know in all the walmarts at least from what I have seen here in Saskatchewan they took out their tanks and no longer sell fish. But that is probably just here!

Petland here sells puppy mill dogs, so I avoid it. They do have the best fish tanks in town, though.

Let's all please remember that one store does not necessarily reflect the entire brand and its subsidiaries.

Of the 4,253 stores that Walmart operates, there is bound to be a few bad eggs. "One swallow does not a summer make" as the saying goes.

As has been suggested, contacting the manager/staff at the store in question should be the first step. If you have no luck dealing directly with the staff, then contact corporate to have the matter addressed.

I think there's a general consensus out there that most, if not nearly all walmart fish sections should be removed. In some places they have been removed. In the dozen or so that I've visited, I've yet to find one that even gets remotely close to on par with ethical fishkeeping practices. Another trend I've noticed is that they have a single person working the entire pet section, and they tend not to be trained at all in regard to fish species or care information. But I do agree, each store can be different than the next, although I tend to reserve that statement for chain pet stores like petco/petsmart, where there are actually a number of good ones.

At the walmart near me they don't even have gravel. Barebottom. Insanly overstocked, nasty dirty tanks. Its sad... then my petco, where I work, we've had broken heaters for 3 frickin months. And corprate still hasn't sent us new ones! Its getting rediculus. Escpecially when most of the employees have a few tanks each! And we feel awful about the fish because the waters so cold we've got reoccuring ich just cuz its not warm enough. Grrrrrr. Will someone call corporate for me and yell at them bout sending us heaters?

If the fish section is beyond repair then we should shut it down but if there is a couple dead fish we should warn them or if they don't do anything we shut it down

As a former walmart employee over this past summer, I can tell you that they actually have good work orders for the employees on how to care for the tanks. I read over all the stuff and it was accurate. The problem is that they don't hire someone to specifically work the fish tanks, and they rarely hire anyone who knows about fish. While I was working there, I was able to teach the people who usually get asked to get fish about stocking and what goes to together. I also got them to make the temperatures correct, clean algae, and feed properly. So, I think Walmart could be a decent supplier; however, they just don't have people working who know what to do, so you cannot get mad at the employees. If you want change, write/email corporate and tell them each store with fish needs a fish specialist.
Also, usually only kids or people who knew nothing about fish bought the fish, and these people tend to not listen to what a salesperson says. They want 3 bala sharks, and 4 tiger barbs for there new 1 gallon tank and you can't stop them. (I encountered that or similar situations numerous times).
