Free Aquarium -> Potential Build?

Hello All,

I was taking my kids to the park, and I found a free aquarium that out for garbage. The tank is a bit of an oddball size 36" by 12.5" by 14" (including black holding 36.5" by 12.75" by 15.25"). I suppose it is about 27 gallons total. As a nice bonus, the tank also included a working Aquaclear 70.

10% bleach solution and go?
Any other concerns that should be noted?

 

I’d deffinately do the bleach, clean the filter and cycle the tank. Check for leaks before filling it up completely. Take it from me, 27 gallons of water on the floor is a disaster! Now for the important question: what fish are going in it???

Concerning fish, I have a 20L does the extra 6" inches or 7 gallons really make a difference?

 

A 20 liter or 20 gallon? Yes. The 7 gallons asks a small difference. Or... you can set up both and do a completely different tank with different stocking.

What’s in the 20 long? You could always do something totally different in the 27.

 

I got 6 kuhlI coaches, 2 ghost shrimp, 3 nerite snails, 10 ember tetras, 1 female betta.

 

Cool! If you wanted to do something different in the 27, you could do
6 cories
12 harlequin rasboras
2 dwarf gouramis (or the honey ones)
You could also do a few guppies in this tank if that’s your style.(same sex, or crazy breeding)
As for plants:
Hornwort (grows like 5 inches every week for me)
Anubias
Marimo moss balls
Java fern
Java moss.

I currently have these plants in my 20 Long: Hornwort, Anubias, Val, Crypt Wendtii, Java fern, duck weed.

 

Unless you can find female dwarf gouramis only do one (two or three honey gourami would be fine).

 

If I were to do something different, would Saltwater fit the bill?

 

You could deffinately do a SW. Do you know what you’d put in it?

 

That's a nice size tank Wish they were easy to find/buy
