We have 3 fish tanks to stock: a 5, a 10 and a 20 long.
My friend said he found some rasboras online that he really wanted to get and the store that sells them wasn't that far away. I agreed to meet him there and maybe we can start getting a few other fish while we're there.
The place was a hole in the wall, very easy to miss. We drove by it 3 times before finding it. They said that they do most of their business online. When we walked in, just after they opened, we found that most of the tanks were mislabeled, incomplete or not labeled at all. A disheveled man with his pants falling down approached us as I walked around with my friend's son pointing to other fish. The guy seemed cocky. My friend talked to him a bit and complemented him on knowing his stuff. He then pointed to me saying I came to help him because I'm kind of smart about fish too, the guy abruptly walked away muttering "fine, let me know if you need anything." We did a couple of laps and I did what I could trying to identify the fish in the tanks since the majority of labels were no good, looking up some on my phone when I was unfamiliar with them, and we spotted some Half-Banded Spiney Eels. I'm not familiar with any eels, so I approached the man and asked him. He said Kuhli Loaches, I said no, eels. He followed me to the tank and I pointed them out. I asked if they can fit in a 20 gallon long. He wouldn't give me a straight answer. I started looking them up on my phone. He said "why don't you just get Kuhli Loaches?" I said "because they need a sand bottom and we have gravel." At that he got angry and said that what I just said was not true and he can't stand people looking stuff up online and thinking they know everything, especially people on FORUMS. I just let him spout off and didn't mention that I am one of those hated forum members and have been for 20+ years. For my friend's sake I kept my mouth shut, wandered around the store until my friend realized he forgot his wallet and we left. I told him what happened and we decided we'll go back to MY preferred LFS and get the fish he wants, even if we have to special order them. We certainly WON'T be going back. I don't care what a large variety he has.
