Found a shrimp.. zooming around tank

Kareninpa

Ok so I got some Christmas Moss from my aquarium center that I was told was pulled from a display tank and put it on my driftwood over a week ago.. I found bladder snails in my tank yesterday and then today saw this little guy zooming around the tank..

We did a 15/20% water change today as the ammonia was creeping up a bit yesterday. We treated the new water with “Stabilize” and “Prime”…

should I be concerned ?

Concerned about what? Shrimp do no harm in an aquarium :)

Flyfisha

Cherry shrimp are harmless. They started in the hobby as a live food culture for big cichlids not that many years ago. Someone isolated a few of the colours and started making money out of living creatures. And here we are a few years later with all these special foods , additives and special tanks .

I am not at all surprised a cherry shrimp turned up in moss.

This guy went outside by accident as a day old in waste tank water. The container of fire fighting water had no filter, no food, no water changes for months before I saw him sitting on rubbish plants in water of 42 degrees centigrade / 108 F heat in the Australian summer.

Keep up the water changes Kareninpa as you still have the very toxic ammonia showing on your tests of an uncycled tank.
You ask if you should be concerned. Well only for the fish because the tank is not cycled. The shrimp may or may not survive with ammonia in the tank. The fish are more important to be concerned about with ammonia. A shrimp might go days without your child seeing it . And then in a few weeks time you add one more that looks exactly the same as “cherry” and nobody will ever know that it was not hiding all along.

I guess I should have been a bit more specific… is it normal for a shrimp to zoom around the tank? I was shocked that we even had a shrimp as I didn’t expect snails or shrimp when we got the moss. We’ve had it for almost Two weeks and this is the first time I’ve seen the shrimp after this water change.
Does that look like a male or female?

Wait is the gravel pink or blue?? Could be confusing the poor shrimp! Nan just messin with ya. It looks fine but what else is in the tank with it?

Fisch

How often are you changing water, and how much do you change each time?

Two Prestilla tetra's, 2 Xray Tetras, and 2 Candy Cane Tetras

10% water change every other week.

I am assuming either the shrimp is hiding from molting or we lost it. Hadn't seen it since this event...

Yeah even tetras will eat it if they can.

How are your Ammonia and Nitrite value with this schedule?

Honestly I hadn't checked in awhile.. things seemed to be going good and we add prime and Stability every time we do a water change.

Honestly I hadn't checked in awhile.. things seemed to be going good and we add prime and Stability every time we do a water change.
My concern would be that you have a bit bigger bioload right now. Prime is first a dechlorinator, with the side benefit of detoxifying Ammonia and Nitrites up to 1ppm combined for ~48 hours.
If that would be my tank, I would increase the frequency of waterchanges.
Normally the parameters are the guide for frequency and volume.
Do you have your new testkit coming? It is and will be your and your tank's best friend...

Mudminnow

My shrimps sometimes do the tank zooming thing for the first few weeks I have them...often after water changes. Then, for whatever reason, they tend to calm down and stop doing this. Therefore, I assume this behavior is somehow associated with stress. But, I don't really know.

Kareninpa

Soo.. new revelation today. We decided since the ammonia was creeping up we would do a 25% water change. Well while we were doing that my husband went to look at the filter and well.. not only did our little girl reappear... She has a friend.. say hello to Cherry and Strawberry. I'll try and get more pictures of them..
