Found A Koi Betta At The Lfs!

I was shopping around at the LFS yesterday and of course gravitated towards the bettas, as per usual. I was just expecting to look but, unsurprisingly, I fell in love with one and had to take her home.

I was very surprised to see a koi betta like her there, let alone for $3.99! Well.. she does have a little chunk missing of her tail, but time and good care will certainly fix that

Obviously her coloring isn't as spectacular as some of the show bettas with koi coloring I have seen, but I still think she's gorgeous.

Side Note : there are bubbles everywhere because I didn't put a filter in this tank, as it's only a 2.5g and the current of it would be too strong for her in such a small space. I'll be doing very frequent water changes of course, and when my 33g finishing cycling she will be one of the girls moving in there for my new betta sorority

So cute! Here in canada we don't have petco so I as super sad to never own a koi betta... One day petsmart had some koi bettas and I bought them. Ever since then they have koi bettas every week. But be careful, my male was sold as a female betta because they have short fins and petsmart isn't smart enough for that.

Oh wow, I work at PetSmart, actually, and I've never seen a koi betta at my store before! Cool find!

I did check her for an egg spot before buying her, as I know a lot of that coloring are male plakats

Cool I had a really nice male koi plakat once, well I still have him but he completely changed color to black with some dark maroon coloring on his fins and a tiny bit of blue/green scales on his body (basically looks solid black when not under lighting). You wouldn't think it was the same fish lol, looks completely different.

That's an awesome price for a betta! I'm sort of new to bettas, but all the ones I've seen at my LFS are around $15. Out of curiosity, are koi bettas uncommon? I've definitely seen them at my LFS once or twice and thought about buying one, but I don't have the space or time for a second betta. Maybe in the future I hear so much about these betta sororities that I'm tempted to try it one day. Please let us know how yours progresses!

I've tried 2 koi females and both became ill a couple months after buying them. I've never had such bad luck with any specific strain as I've had with koi. Needless to say, I can't not try again so I bought a yellow spotted female with a black tinged tail. She's in quarantine but within sight of the other females to be added to the sorority. Not too sure she will work out though, she flares at them quite a bit. Mine wasn't nearly as cheap, 12$ for her.

Just went to Petland and saw the same 2 cuties there from last week. The black and yellow was being sold for a whopping $35! While the regular koi was being sold as a female when it was actually a male for $8. Wish I could've gotten the $8 because kois are rare up here in Canada and being sold that cheap was even better. But I already bought a baby betta that had velvet from there, so I got no room.
