Food Comparison Questions

Hello.

I'm a little confused about these new fish flakes I bought. Up until recently, I've been using cheap Walmart flakes. All the fish LOVE them. They look like this

With the following ingredients

Giving them the following analysis

Since this container is about empty, I decided to try a better name with the one pictured here

They have the following ingredients and food analysis

Now I understand that the ingredient list on the new bottle sounds better being that it's whole fish and not meals. However, why is the protein only 42% whereas the cheap one with meal 48%? Seems like it should be the other way around. I also noticed that the fat percentage is higher on the Omega One than the other. Is this good or bad? Lastly, the Omega One flakes are HUGE. I've fed them to my fish once by crumbling them up. Even with the better ingredients, my fish didn't seem too thrilled with them. So what's going on? Any advice or suggestions?

Sorry, meant to also ask if the protein provided by the better ingredients is a better "grade" if you will? If so, is that why the percentage is actually lower, because it's better?

I wouldn’t say Tetra is bad. They’ve been around forever. Why is higher protein better than lower or vice versa? Same with fats? I don’t know. Also keep in mind aquarium fish don’t have the same needs as their wild counterparts.

Well protein helps growth. I also just assumed that actual fish ingredients would yield a higher protein than grains and meals, but it doesn't.

I wonder if chromedome52 has any thoughts on this? Personally, I’m not really concerned whether the main ingredient is fishmeal or whole fish.

Same... I honestly just like spending money on expensive food, I don't think the fish care about 6% protein difference.

Both brands are very good. The difference in protein has to do with the type of food. Betta food has different nutrients, as Bettas are weird in their requirements. The Omega One is a color food; it is not intended for growth, but to enhance color. The color food has more of the chemicals and enzymes needed for color, which is not protein, therefore the protein percentage is not as high. The ingredients needed to enhance color do not necessarily translate into growth.

I have found better foods for both growth and color. I use Xtreme brand foods, mostly their Cichlid PeeWee pellets. They have produced a good degree of color in several of my fish, and decent growth. Given that I only have a handful of medium-large Cichlids remaining, it works quite well as a staple food.

Does Omega One produce foods that are not color enhancing, thus having more protein?

They have a whole line of foods. Any store that carries one should be carrying a dozen or so types of food.
