Fluval Wood.

I bought some fluval mopanI wood and I was hoping to get away with just soaking it. I'm not worried about tannins just it being safe to use. I don't really have a pot to stick it in and boil. I could put it in a bucket and pour boiling water in. Or maybe hydrogen peroxide? Would that wreak the wood?

 

I have fluval mopanI driftwood in my betta tank. I had the same issue as you with no having a pot for it. I scrubbed it really well, then put it in a 5 gallon bucket and boiled water and poured that over it until the water covered it well. I did this 3 times and then soaked it for about a week, and I have had no issues.

 

I think a rinse in hot water would be fine. No need to boil it or let it sit in water for weeks. I personally just rinse it and place it in the tank.

 

The tannins will eventually dissipate with water changes. It's not usually as bad as it may seem. Your tank water me be a bit yellow for a few weeks but it won't last long. I have actually never boiled or soaked wood. A simple rinse, fish lined to a rock and placed into the tank. Tannins are not harmful to fish, and is actually healthy for some.

I do similar. A quick rinse, and plop in the tank. Some woods may float for a few days/weeks, but mopanI will quickly sink I'm no time.

Edit: boiling wood is ment to 'soften' it more quickly and will break down at a faster rate in the aquarium due to the heat quickly opening/expanding the cellular structure of the wood....
