Fluval hobs vs canister

I currently have 2 hobs on my 45g, I know I could go down to 1 but whatever, it keeps the water clean and circulation good.
However both hobs are noisy, all hobs have been though the Seachem one quieted down right before I switched it out - it wasn’t the best filter I’ve ever seen.
One is aquaclear and one is fluval, so same difference really. I’ve tried replacing the motor heads. Put Vaseline on them (that kinda helped). But they’re loud and driving me batty.
I have 407 canister I was going to put in but have been too sick to sit down and figure it out.
Now that it’s passing I’m considering if I can get it done this week.
But will it be quieter? I’m fairly sure it will be more effective overall but I’m really hoping for quiet!!

In general canisters are quieter than a HOB. Especially 2 HOBs. I don’t have experience with Fluval cans, but I can imagine they’re a similar noise level to Eheims. My Eheim 2213 is practically silent

I run Aquaclear 30-110, Fluval 1-307, and an FX4. I love all my filters, I’ve never had an issue and I know if something breaks Fluvals warranty will pretty much cover it

Addictedtobettas , which model of Aquaclear is being noisey? You might just need a new shaft and new impeller.

Your 2 HOB filters should be more than adequate for a 45g tank.

I have a Fluval 404 on my 75 gal and it is pretty much silent. I also have a Marineland 350 hob on there as well for backup and because I have a heavily stocked tank. The Fluval canisters are great. Along with the foams that fit along the side put foams in the bottom tray,, the remaining top 3 trays for bio media. If you do want to use carbon etc that goes in the top tray.

You won’t even know the fluval is on there it will be dead silent. I love cans compared to HOBs

Alright, I will get it setup this week. Ty!

The fluval is kinda low key vibrating noise, but the aqua clear is very obviously the propeller. They've both done a good job of keeping the tank clean, and I have added extra filter padding to clear out some junk, but the noise is noticeable.
I'll put in the 407 and hope all is well.

It's the AC 70 that came with the 45g kit. The fluval c4 that I purchased before the canister got here, in hopes that it would be silent, wasn't... although it did quiet down after 2 weeks for some reason.
The AC is noticeable from another room.

I'd left the hobs on in hopes of using them on another tank, and having the bio filters already going, once I get something in the 40-70g range next. But the grinding hum isn't appealing long term, so if I can't fix that then they're only emergency filters at this point.

Well I'll check Eheim out if the fluval is noisy.

I've heard such mixed responses regarding fluval warranty, but I may see what they offer - I love the tanks, and the filters in the flex & spec are great, but these hobs are bleh. Hate to waste $100 on filters.

I’ve had a fluval that I got with my first 55gal back in 1991 still running it had to replace the ceramic impeller shaft about 6 years ago other than that has been going strong. So I have no worries about warranty because they are all but bulletproof.

Oh wow, that's wonderful of them. I will contact them then. Thanks!

IMO there’s HOB are the best design. I also don’t run a “stock” HOB, I’ve added a small pre filter sponge and filled it with media. I’ve never had any issues but to each there own

I'm running canister now. Every once in a while I go to HOB thinking it will be less work and it ends up being more, as well as being a bit louder and making a bit more of a mess unless I'm right on top of water level, so I go back to canister. I don't think you can go wrong with Fluval or Eheim canisters, as both have proven to be more reliable than not and spare parts are widely available if something breaks down the road. If you have the space, canisters are nice.
