Fluval Evo Series Quality?

New Fish in Town

I was in the store the other day and saw a 5 gallon Fluval EVO Marine tank. It looks like these things come in a bunch of different sizes. How loud are these things? How much upgrading do most people do with the Fluval EVO series? How do they compare to the BioCube systems? My first big tank was a freshwater Top fin 20 gallon starter set that I bought on sale. After 2 days I had to spend over $100 on a fluval 106 canister because the HOB was too loud. I also spent around $200 dollars to upgrade the lights after 2 years plus added CO2. I don't like loud filtration in my house. At some point I'm guessing multiple tank syndrome will strike again and I'll attempt a saltwater setup of some sort. I don't have a place for a 3rd tank right now, but I want to be prepared for when I decide to do it.

I've had a Fluval V before, pretty good quality and the noise was almost non-existent.
I wouldn't recommend a 5 gallon as your first saltwater tank. Look into the bigger Fluval, I think it's the 13.5 or 15 gallon one.

I have a fluval 13.5. nice design however stock filtration is a bit questionable. please keep in mind that in a a5 gallon tank you can hardly keep one fish

I have to add that I returned the evo and got a biocube 32 tank only for 99 bucks. compared to my evo at $ 135

I've had my Fluval Spec V 5 gallon (previous version of Evo) tank as a reef tank running for almost 3 years now. It's almost silent, very quiet. Evo has the same return pump as the Spec so you should upgrade that. Evo has upgraded LEDs to adequately grow soft corals. So that's nice but you can't control the spectrum so many upgrade their lights. I would also add a nano wavemaker too. It's so small that daily top offs are required to keep salinity stable. I have a Tunze nano ATO but stopped using it because the water level in the tank drops too far before it kicks in. I think the filtration area is fine. But I don't use the sponge that came with it. In the bottom I have a bag of ceramic rings, on top of that a bag of carbon, on top of that a bag GFO, on top of that 2 inch filter sponge and finally the top layer is a nitrate absorbing filter pad. I do a 75% WC every 2 weeks which involves vacuuming the substrate and cleaning just the sponge filter. Once a month I take out everything from the filter box and replace everything except the ceramics and sponge filter. I get amazing results with this routine. I have 2 clownfish, had them since I started the tank, and probably 12 types of soft corals including 1 tiny RBTA and 2 sunburst BTA. Love my Pico reef. Good luck.
