Fluval 406 - Is it enough?

I have a 75 gallon set up running a Fluval 406 canister. It's great and quiet and all that, but is it enough? Should I get a second smaller can like a Fluval 206 or a HOB like Aquaclear 70 or C4? I know the mantra is "more filtration is better", but how far do you go with this?

Well it's usually a good rule of thumb to have a filter that has a GPH of 10X your tank size. So, you need something that is around 750GPH, and that Fluval 406 is only 383 GPH. Can you add another one of those or are you only wanting to add a HOB? If you add a HOB filter, I would recommend the Aqueon QuietFlow 55/75. It has a 400 GPH flow rate and is really quiet. I got mine at petco for around $40 and it comes with your first 2 filter cartriges.

Hope this helps!!

I thought it was 10x for HOBs and 5x for canisters? If 5x, that would be 375gph.

I just looked up this sticky -

Unless it's incorrect or outdated, it says 8-10x for HOBs and 5x for canisters.

Oh, well there you go! That one filter should be good. Thanks Geoff for clarifying!
