Hello all! Its been a while since I was last on. But I have a problem.
I just got back from a 3 day vacation and about thirty minutes after I got home my Fluval 405 filter started making this grinding noise. Like when the motor is burnt up. but ive only had it for a year maybe less and its in great condition. I don't know what the problem with it could be though. What should I do? I took it all apart and rinsed a little bit of it but not much at all as I want to save all the BB but idk what the problem could be or what I should do. Will my fish be ok? What do I do about this? I don't have room for HOB filter and I don't have any more canister filters I can use. Suggestions?

Thanks!

Hmm.. you're going to need air exchange at the very leaast so I would put an airstone in there.

get the BB back into the tank(the pads). NOW. Do not get any untreated water on it. If you have any mesh/nylon or pantyhose put it in there and then into the water, it will continue to function this way. Then we can work on the filter.

Alright ill do that. IDK if I have anything to put them in though. can I just drop them in the tank until I get the filter fixed? and I already have two airsones in there.

Depends, if their pads then yes, if their small beads or such id atleast put them in a bowl.

Wellllllll you may have to get a new one. Check everything in it, make sure nothings cracked or chipped.

Is there any way a tiny piece of filter media could have fallen in over the little impeller? This happened to me once and the noise was awful.

See what you can do with that filter, this is one of the reasons I at least keep a small spare HOB on all my large tanks. It never covers the entire tank but gives you a little backup at least.

Now onto your canister, it could also be just an impeller problem, I would think that if things really do not want to work the cost of the spare impeller is not much at all compared to the unit. You might also check the local want adds or craigslist as you may find another one for cheap money.
