Fluval 306, shrimp and fry

So I have my tank set up with a Fluval 306, but because the intake has such large holes I had to put something over it to protect my guppy fry and my shrimp. I put tights over it but I think the filtration is suffering because of it. There is a lot of debris on the tights now. This photo is when I first added the tights to the intake.




I'm just wondering what you would suggest as an alternative to tights that won't affect the filtration in my tank too much. I was thinking a sponge fitted around the intake, but I'm not sure what the best option would be. Any ideas? It has to be something I can get in England.

I would say go buy a cheap sponge refill for a sponge filter and cut that out like a hollow cylinder to fit around it. If you buy it with large pore I don't think it will lose suction at easily

A presponge filter would be the way to go. Stockings as you have found become clogged quickly.



These fit onto Aquaclears, not sure about a 302.

 

Woah, I hadn't realised how much my tights were restricting the flow in the filter. It's soooo much better now, and the sponge will be much easier to take off and clean then pop back during water changes

I couldn't get any actual pre filter sponges that would fit, so I improvised with this:







I think it came out quite well actually, if a little bit rough around the edges:
