I am going to be setting up a 55 gallon aquarium nothing alive except fish I'm going to run 2 fluval 306 filters. They have the 3 baskets bottom foam, mid biomax, top fine pad and carbon. My 2 questions are 1. the biomax in them seems low in basket can I add more and 2. I like the idea of some carbon helping clarity of water but was thinking of having 1 filter with no carbon an just having bottom basket foam mid and top with biomax and the second filter the standard setup is this ok or something you can't do. Also sorry if you have anyothet ideas please let me know. I'm kinda set on the fluval filter but ideas with the media appreciated. Fish will be smaller community fish not a fan of large fish.

Good morning,

Yes, you can add more bio max if you wish. The more surface area you have in the filter, the more beneficial bacteria you will have to help maintain the cycle.

You do not have to have carbon in both filters. If you choose to use carbon, placing it in one filter should do the trick. Some folks do not use carbon at all, but I'm one that uses it around the clock in all of my tanks.

Replace the carbon for fresh every 3 to 4 weeks.

Hello,

As long as the baskets still fit into place the way they should, then you can add more media.

You can fill the canisters pretty much any way that you wish. The bio media should be positioned so that it gets the cleanest water. The water should pass through pads or floss first, carbon, then the bio max. If you have the directions for the filter, it should tell you where to place what.

I would only put carbon in 1 filter.
