No! Go look up how big flowerhorns get. That's like putting an adult in a closet and letting it grow up.

Noooo. Please don't get a flowerhorn if you don't know what you're doing. They get very large and require complicated care, and if you don't even know how BIG they get you shouldn't own one.

Wow...no one even said hello or welcomed this member to the forum, just jumped right on them.

Anyway, welcome to FishLore!!

I don't keep them but if you start with a 45 (even a 20 maybe) you could probably get a baby then upgrade as it gets older, like you said.
Keep in mind sometimes life happens and that upgrade that seems reachable now may not be when it's needed.

Cichlidnut might be able to help.

Hello! Welcome to Fishlore

No, I don’t recommend the 20 gallon for a flowerhorn, even while it’s a juvenile. You can definitely do a small flowerhorn in a 45 gallon, then get a larger tank once he starts outgrowing the tank. These fish get pretty big, and they are very active, meaning they need a bigger tank.

Anyways, good luck on the flowerhorn

No. Do more research and you'll know why. They just get to big and most of the time when people say they are going to upgrade in 2 years something happens and they can't afford the tank. These fish need atleast 60 gallons for a single flowerhorn. "These fish need a decent amount of space to thrive and therefore shouldn’t be kept in small 10 and 20 gallon aquariums.

Why don’t we tell the OP what he can do, not what he can’t.

So if you want one single fish in a 20 gallon fish tank you could do ONE german blue ram. But you can't have anything else in the tank just that ONE fish.

That’s untrue, you could have bottom dwellers, a school of fish, and a GBR in a 20 gallon.

Just like to let people know. I have decided to go with a pair of kribensis cichlid. I asked the guy at the fish shop and he said they will be fine in a 20 gallon. Another thing id like to mention is that US gallons are smaller than UK gallons

Welcome to Fishlore! Good luck with the kribs.

Everything's bigger in US, especially in Texas
