Don't only males get koks? So do you know it's a male now? Or do females get them also?

Females can also get koks but usually males have much larger koks than females. I'm assuming that male fish, unlike humans, have a tendency of having more body fat than females.

 

what if its a mating display for the females and shows them that they know how to hunt and how to feed themselves by how much fat the have stored in their Kok(size)?
Of course females would have one, for fat storage, but the males possibly get bigger to show of their qualities and that they have good genes?

 

It's entirely possible that it's a product of sexual selection, like how male peacocks have colorful plumage while females don't. Perhaps it has a function as fat storage, which is why females still have a small one, but males with larger koks are favored by females.

SK, it's not so much that they are better hunters and stuff but that they are more dominant. That's the big thing. Female fish always want to breed with the dominant male. The dominant male will always have a larger kok than other males. In a tank of a lot of FHs you'll be able to tell which is the male dominant fish because of the size of his kok. Dominant fish have larger koks because, they being the dominant fish, get more food than the rest of the fish, usually. Another factor of the large koks in FHs is that they are specifically bred to have a large kok. People think it is 'beautiful'. So it is a desired gene anymore.

Just finished a 100% waterchange. FH wasn't too happy about that lol.

Nope. He is bright blue. The pictures where he looks white are when the sun is hitting him so it washes out his color.

Actually, length wise, he hasn't grown that much. But he has definitely bulked up thankfully.

 

Ooh.. I kinda want one... After I someday get the discus/tetra/ram tank, I mean. But it's on the list, along with Geophagus tapajos(sp?), pea puffers, ADFs, and many others(not all in the same tank, obviously).

Anyway, update on the little guy! I vented him today and he is indeed a male. That is if I know what I'm doing ;D. I also added black sand to his tank and did a 100% WC. And he just finished his worm and is now happy.

Yep, he still gets a worm every day along with his other foods. He loves worms LOL. I'm growing my own worms. He was $375 including shipping. I imported him from Thailand from a very well known FH breeder. You should get an FH!! Or two lol. Yeah a 55 gallon will set them for life. A 75 for a pair or a 90 for a split pair.

I'm waiting to buy a FH until I can spend the money to get a high quality one. The ones at petco look horrible IMO. I look forward to watching your "Blue" grow up thanks for sharing!

What do you think about faders?

 

If you buy from a breeder you should be good. Just don't buy from pet stores . I'll send you a couple of links that I saw today.

He's growing slower cause I have him in a tiny tank right now. He is going in a 30 gallon long in a couple days. They can grow really fast and can grow really slow depending on the fish and the surroundings. I've found that if you put the fish in a large tank right away they'll grow faster but if you put it in a small tank it will grow slower. But then if you upgrade the small tank they'll grow faster. Just as long as you don't keep them in small tanks for a long period of time they are fine. A 29 gallon for a couple of months would be fine. Just keep it really clean.

 

Wow, I've never seen a king Kamfa like that. I like!

 

I doubt it is pure King Kamfa but even so they aren't that common. The really high quality ones are BRIGHT silver. I used to have one. She was a great breeder.
