Flowerhorn Blog

Hey,

This is my blog about the Flowerhorns I'll be keeping from now on. Hopefully there will be more than one! A little background on my FH keeping experience. I started out keeping Flowerhorns in 2004. I got my first FHs from a breeder in Pune, India. I started out with six fry, around 4 months old, and ended up with two pairs out of that batch. I sold four of the FHs and kept a pair. I bred that pair and also got other strains of Flowerhorns. Before I shut down my fishroom in India I had 15 breeding pairs and swarms of babies. Now, after not having Flowerhorns for a year, I have ventured back into the field but with a different strain that I've never kept before. My new fish is a Titanium ThaI Silk who was imported from Thailand. I got him on April 26th, 2012. Currently he measures around 2" long and is fairly thin still. I'm assuming it is he now. He's extremely shy and I'm currently having difficulty getting him to eat. Hopefully he'll warm up soon.

He, I'm gonna have to think of a name, is currently housed in a 10 gallon until I move which will be in June. Given his small size I believe that will do. He will get a 75 gallon all to himself once he gets a bit bigger and hopefully I'll be able to find him a girlfriend.

This is a picture of his sire, credit to Samson Young.

Thanks!

Heather, I hope he does. He is already a very similar color. His color is a little more greenish blue than bright blue.

Wow, I didn't think so many people would be interested! Thank you all for your kind compliments. He really is a gorgeous fish, even at this young age. Hopefully he is like good wine and will only improve with age.

SK, I'm not sure if it is a boy or not. He's a bit young to sex at the moment but I'm guessing that it is a male.

Lorabell, I'm sure a ThaI Silk would look beautiful in any of your tanks but I doubt your other fishes would like it. Flowerhorns are very much solitary fish and rarely tolerate other fish. One of the only fish that I seem to be able to consistently house with FHs without too much difficulty are Blood Parrots. Maybe it is because they are both hybrids and sympathize with one another ;D.

An update with more pictures today! I just need to get the pictures off my camera onto my computer

LOL horn.. your funny. Flowerhorns get their koks, pronounced 'cokes', when they hit 3" or so. The late bloomers get their around 5-7".

Had to do it. Partially because I forgot the term used to describe the bump.....I'm more tired tonight then I should be. Koks, won't forget that.

You should name him narwhal btw.

Hahaha. Yeah it is a kinda interesting word, don't you agree? Koks is the plural by the way. Kok is the singular term.

Narwhal? Why not just go straight for the kill and name him Ptolemy? Or Fabio!

Awesome, the beginning, that is exactly what I was thinking, "Ahh, it has gotten away" then the caption comes up. great video. what else will you feed him??

LOL yeah I had fun with the captions ;D. I'll be feeding him a couple different types of worms, some homemade protein cubes (they have veggies in them too), homemade protein pellets, two varieties of 'cichlid' pellets from the petstores, and soon I'll be getting some NLS. Also he gets to try whatever other food I might have around. I emailed the seller and apparently he was raised on worms so I have to ween him off worms and onto other foods.

More pictures. There is an evident kok growing on this fish. I think he was underfed by the owner or something because this is only his sixth feeding and he has put on quite a bit of weight.

How cute is he?? X3

Wow, that was fast that his kok started growing in

Not really. Koks are just fat stores so the fact that he is growing a kok means he has enough left over nutrients from his food that he can put that towards bulking up.

Weird... lol

Don't only males get koks? So do you know it's a male now? Or do females get them also?
