Flourite Black Sand

I’m very interested in Flourite Black Sand for my 10g tank. I have eco complete in my 50 gal, but I have snails that like to burrow, so thinking this new substrate will be better for them. Can anyone share their experiences with flourite sand? What were things you did/didn’t like about it? Is like more of a finer gravel, or is it truly sand? Thanks!

Oh, I have that in my 5.5 gal! Probably the annoying things about it is how when you first pour it in, a lot of it floats and theres 300 bubbles in it.. I think thats just a normal sand thing though. Not too sure what the difference between fine gravel and sand would be, but its very small grains if thats what youre refering to. I have some trumpet snails in there and they love it. Its a tad hard to root new plants because the sand is lightweight, and the plant unroots itself and floats up- so you have to make sure you mound it basically. Waste doesnt sink into the sand, so its easy to clean.

Thank you! This really helps out.

No problem!! And i cant believe I forgot, but to get rid of the bubbles and floating, you just gotta mess around with the sand for awhile. Stir it and kick it around.

I have used this a lot in the past but switched to black diamond blasting sand due to cost. I really like flourite black sand for an inert black sand substrate. Wash it before using it. The longer you spend washing it before hand, the better. I will rinse it in a bucket and swirl it around until its almost clear. If you dont, the finer particulates can hang in the water for a week+. It's worth the 20 minutes to thoroughly wash it first time.

I find planting in it to be very easy, never have any issues with plants coming out of it as long as its a proper depth. It is truly a sand in appearance as well.
