floating live plants

HI everybody
I will start out by saying I have had very little experience with live plants and the little I do have hasn't been good but I'm thinking about just trying some kind of live floating plant for my 44 gallon tall corner tank.
I tried to update my info on my profile for the lighting but It seems to be not working at the moment.

So the light I have on my tank is a Zoo Meo-F15T8/Super daylight-Ultra sun it is a little light bulb at 18/457 mm that's all the info that is on the light except it is made in Germany....

I will getting some new fish and either 1 or 2 pearl gouramis and not really sure of what else. But I need some help on what floating live plants do pearl gouramis like w/o using any type of co2.

I also need to know how to keep them from bring diseases into my tank? I had a java fern and a amazon sword in my tank before and I just added some supplements and they where growing and looking so pretty but I had to throw them out b/c of disease. Anyway to make a long story short will part bleach and water kill anything on live plants how long should I leave them in there. I just done a dip before and it still brought disease in my tank.

Also they where low light plants would I need a medium light plant because it will be closer to the light?
Would I also need plant supplements for the water?
Please help if you know about live plants I would really appreciate the help and any experience you would like to share...

I don't know about what to dip plants in to kill of any disease but hopefully someone else can help you with that.

As for an easy live floating plant you could try hornwort. They are extremely easy to care for and grow like crazy.

Good afternoon,

Dwarf Water Lettuce is a great floating plant.

Wisteria can also be floated.

The plants I get from PetCo are in a plants only tank with no critters so the only thing that might be an issue is pond snails. I do not mind the pond snails.

I rinse the plant and prune it before I add it to the tank and I'm done.

Did you hit SAVE when you tried to update your Profile? If you are still having problems, create a thread in the Forum Issues section and MIKE will take a look at it.

Floating Plants:

Common Salvinia (this grows like a weed in my tank)
Duckweed (never had success with this floating plant, my current was to strong)
Frogbit

Some other plants that can be planted or left floating
Hornwort (grows fast)
Wisteria (Great plant to leave floating)
Camboda
Najas Grass

How to disinfect plants:
Bleach Dip (I wouldn't recommend this option, it can kill certain plants) 30 second bath
Hydrogen Peroxide Dip (30 minute bath)
Alum Bath (2 to 3 days)
Potassium Permanganate Dip (20 minute bath)

For dipping, I would have 3 containers: 1st Container (whatever disinfectant you choose w/water, 2nd container-filled with dechlorinated water, 3rd container-last bath filled with dechlorinated water).

Ken

I bought the other plants I had one was from petland which did have snails in the tank and fish but the other I got at petsmart it was in it's own container which I'm think what ever it was came from petland which now has gone out of business.
The disease killed all my angelfish and I never did found out what it was....
So I started the whole tank over again...So I'm thinking I need to find plants that have no fish in with them or snails b/c I do not like snails.
Ok I will post it if I keep having trouble with changing my profile info...thanks Ken

Ok thanks for all the plant suggestions I will look at the pet store and see if they have any listed above.
The reason I used bleach and water was to kill the snails that where on the java fern they told me nothing else would kill them but it didn't kill the plant but it was just only a couple of dips it was thriving in my tank when I removed it.
Will all you listed above with they kill snails as well as any disease?
I will also check out the link....thanks so much for your help

On the floating plants do I also need to add plant supplements?

All the dips will kill snails, Java Fern is a very sturdy plant and can survive the Bleach dip. In my shrimp tank that I have the common salvinia, I don't dose with anything and it does extremely well.

Oh ok....Yeah I pull the picture up of your shrimp tank and I do like the salvinia, I will check this weekend at the pet shop and see if they have any. Gosh how many do you think I should? I do not have a lot of room at the top of my tank I also have some cover with 2 tall plants. Do they get big? Do they keep grown or do they stop at a pacific size or just do the roots grow? Do I have to trim them any? Thanks so much for your help....I love both your tanks by the way!!

I don't do anything special with them, they just grow and spread throughout the surface. The roots don't grow long compared to Amazon Frogbit in my opinion.

I went to pet store today and bought some Wisteria and I done the bleach in water method b/c I couldn't find any of the Potassium Permanganate I looked everywhere...Sigh But I have to say I was still afraid to put it in the tank, I sure hope it doesn't introduce anything in the tank if it does I will never buy live plants again.....I didn't really think about quarantine them, until I read it on the net oh man I hope that wasn't a mistake.

I never QT my plants. You should be fine so long as all traces of bleach were removed.

From your description it sounds like your past plants may have been exposed to pesticide or another chemical. This is most with imported plants.

Good luck with your new plants.
