Ever since that vampire betta bit me, I don't seem to need sleep.. I just crave bloodworms twice a day for some reason..

LOL.. I guess some days I go to bed later and others I get up early so it seems like i'm up a lot.

Yes, I asked the event coordinator and she said it would be ok and i'd just need to get permission from owners to take photos of individual Bettas.

Yesterday I was my LFS and saw some more black calico platys as well as some blue ones, I bought 1 blue calico in hopes she would mate with my black calico and have lots of baby calicos. She is very beautiful, I will try and have some pics asap.

LOL.. well Stacy's not a big computer fan so I do most of the posting, although a lot of times we'll talk about posts and what to reply. I don't sleep thanks to my vampire betta.

I do video production and stacy's a cake decorator.

Oh really? Now don't shoot me down, guys, but platies kind of leave me cold. Don't know why. It's a good job too, or I'd need an extension to my house to house all the fish I love! Right now, am more of a molly-pleco-betta girl. Would love to own a betta but not yet. Anyway, sorry to butt in.

See I often day dream about a fish store, but I reckon there's a reason they're all so uncaring. I think it would simply not be cost-effective to care for the fish the way they should be cared for in a commercial environment.

lol.. platys are such funny little fish and the color/pattern variety is amazing. I wonder what a breeding with a blue calico and a blue mickey mouse platy would yield? maybe 2 or 3 pairings could yield blue calico mickey mouse platys to breed and establish lines of.

I think it would be possible to at least run a store in a more humane fashion.. say for instance, the betta 'cups'.. how about using beanie baby containers instead? you can still fit a number of bettas on a shelf, but at least they have a little room to move.. it wouldn't be an easy go, but it's doable I think.

I think so too. I think no matter what, you can be inventive and improve from the usual store practices. Buuuut, would you be picky about they new owners? Would you often refuse to sell them because you would just know they wouldn't take good care of them?

I know what you mean. I can see that some are really pretty and have the deepest haze of red, for example, but emotionally, they just don't really do it for me. I couldn't imagine getting very attached to one. Don't know why. Maybe childhood trauma? ;D

Yes creative people. You could run a betta shop out of your house, it would be the most economical way, get a custom built shallow tank with opaque dividers to house all your bettas together and use one heater and filter.
The best I say was male betta's in little betta barracks in regular tanks with other tanks. They actually only had one betta per tank and at least it was heated and filtered water.

I think so too. I think no matter what, you can be inventive and improve from the usual store practices. Buuuut, would you be picky about they new owners? Would you often refuse to sell them because you would just know they wouldn't take good care of them?
Sure why not refuse to sell, it's YOUR buisness. It might be better to go into the buisness with a partner so if it fails you won't be hit as bad but of course a main part if your buisness would work or not is LOCATION. It would be smart to open up a shop where there's some large fish clubs around and not too many other stores. It would be best not to open a strictly fish store either, you could specialize in it but you need at least dog and cat supplies. I've given it a lot of thought and that's my goal. Once I'm done with college either live with my parents for a time or get a small house/apartment, get a job, I'm thinking of being a teacher (nice hours, at least around here, and get summer off) save up for a pet store and go to a club and find a friend and open a shop with him/her or more than one person. If it's a success open another.

Am sure all fish store owners actually started loving fish, and then most kind of get blase'd about it, or when the thin margins start making themselves felt.

I'm trying to get my gf to think about this. I have more than a few ideas for the tank(s) necessary. Also, you can build them yourself very cheap, as long as you have the necessary tools.

And..selling isn't really an issue, since you can sell them on aquabid.

yea, it's one of those back burner ideas that we think about and plan here & there.. hopefully down the line, we'll have things go the way so that we can start a business with a realistic chance of making it.

I was sad to lose our gold twinbar Daisy, she was my favorite and I really liked to watch her.. but I don't feel as attached to them as Bettas - but the Bettas interact so much with us, I think that makes sense.

That's why I really want to read up on bettas and take the step. I get the feeling they have more of a relationship with their human.
