I just bought 4 flagfish (2 male, 2 females) and I was surprised when I came home to see that both males were swimming about - while the two females were hiding. Any idea why just the females would be acting like that? One was wedged underneath a makeshift cave I dug for my Corydoras to sit in, while the other was underneath/inbetween a plant and a pot. Both were low to the ground and probably hiding.

Again, any ideas as to why?

Hiding due to the other fish being aggressive.

Everything in my tank is pretty docile and calm, aside from the Danios and Buffei Cats. And that really doesn't explain why the males were out and about - the females were just as feisty as the males.

When a fish is stressed by other fish, it will go into hiding. Since you just brought them home, and it is the only factor that has changed in your tank, it seems reasonable to say the males are being assertive in the tank and the 2 females are the brunt of it. Amorous males, perhaps?
