Fixing my tank with TSS, a detailed timeline. UPDATE: 2 wks in and I am CYCLED!!

If anyone is familiar with my story you will now I got a bunch of bum advice from Petco/Petsmart. Well it has been over 2 months and my tank won't cycle. I am assumin it is because I have too many fish in there.

I am unemployed, so I wasn't too worried since I was doing a large water change either everyday or every other day.

Well, my tank would seem like it was working its way to a cycle and then BAM, the ammonia would jump to 4ppm+. So I would do a bunch of water changes to bring it down and everything seemed like it was going well. Then it would jump high again. All this was happening and I was always reading 0/0 for nitrite/nitrate so I knew nothing was happening naturaly, again I assume it is because I have such an overload of fish.

So after much consideration I have decided to use the Tetra Safe Start product and hope that helps.

I am pretty much starting the tank from scratch:

I performed (3) 50% water changes today after the ammonia spiked 4ppm+ again. I got it down to .5ppm, so that will be my starting point for the log I will keep. I know a lot of people inquire about this product, so I thought a nice detailed log of the daily ins and outs might be a good reference for people like me that end up chasing their tales. If no one is interested, then let me know(no offense taken, as this might be old hat to most people on this forum) and I will keep my findings to my self.

I know a lot of people have had great success using to start a tank, but I couldn't find any real info on using to fix mistakes(not cycling properly, overstocking to start, etc...). so it will be intersesting to see if this helps me. other wise I think I will pop a blood vessel.

Sorry, I haven't read anything about blood shed helping the cycle.

You've read the Q&A here on the site from Tetra? Following it (along with Shawnie's comments) might increase the chances of success. Also go into this knowing that not everyone has had favorable results with TSS.
Hang in there!

well, cross your fingers for me, but it appears to finally be on its way to cycling. it is almost 5ppm nitrates, but I am still airing on the side of caution with my reading.

We are always interested in hearing about people's experiences with BB boosters. Every test we do in our homes helps the future fish keepers decide what is best for their tank.

Congrats.

Did you only do the 1 water change during the test?
I assume you had no fish loss during, correct?
Is the 8 oz bottle for a 75 gallon tank? so you used nearly twice the dosage?

Thanks for the test, I appreciate it.

I kept a close eye on the levels(tested everyday). The ammonia went a bit over 1ppm, so I did a change(and I used tetra aquasafe instead of prime).

I had no fishloss at all. =)

the way the bottles come(15 gallon, 30 gallon or 75 gallon) I was advised by tetra to use one whole bottle of the next size up from my tank size. if you try to divide the bottle, you may not get all the necessary bacteria out of it.

around day 6 when the ammonia climbed up a bit, I thought maybe the bacteria wasn't taking. so I went looking for more TSS and was not able to find any. I ordered 2 bottles online, but by the time they showed up the tank was on its way to being completed. So if anyone in the NH,MA area need 75 gallon TSS bottled, let me know.

CONGRATS!!!!
I also used TSS and cycled quickly. I never got to 1ppm ammonia but I also started with some cycle media (not enough to cycle fishless despite my efforts of over 5+ weeks) I just kept stalling. I would definitely use TSS again and am planning to in a few days for my Quarantine tank.
Glad it worked for you!!!
