10 Gallon Tank Fishy heater

My 10 gallon has experienced a fishy smell before. At the moment, it does not smell this way. However, the heater on it does smell fishy. What would cause that?

Also, this heater is older. It is an Elite brand. Set at 68F, it has been making my water be 80-82F. The light indicator was still on at that point... I just changed it back down to the next setting (64F). What would cause the temperature so high? Maybe it is just a crappy heater because I don't think there is a 66F option - which would get my preferred temperature of 78F achieved. Could it be room temperature (that is only 67F right now and is about the maximum I aI'm for allowing the house heater to hit)?

It sounds like it's time for a new heater. I would hate for you to come home to boiled fish should the heater continue to increase the temperature even more.

I checked the thermometer today and the tank has cooled down to be about 76F, though heater light is on currently. Not sure of how hot it goes up to. It seems like the light is always on...

I'll have to check what wattage I should use. Guess I should get some money gathered together and purchase a new heater.

I have extra heaters lying around, but they are 100 or 150W. Nothing smaller except the really small one for something less than 7 gal.

 

50 is usually ok for a 10 but I usually only have 100s in the house, it just won't need to work as hard to keep the tank warm.

 

Thanks for the advice! I ended up sending an order for one of those heaters (100W) and getting fish food as well. Oh, and more prime. My little bottle won't work as well for once my larger tank is up and running. Plus I'm running out of API Stress Coat with where I've got the 29 gallon.
