Fishlore Gathering - Wishful Thinking

Maybe I've started too many threads today, oops.

Anyway, does anyone else wish there could be a Fishlore gathering or convention or something? I think that would be the highlight of my life (okay maybe not really but close) But that just sounds like so much fun. I would love to meet a lot of the people on here. Ugh, if only.

It would be great to break down regions/ locations and hold a meet and greet to find out who lives in my state and decide on a more formal meeting platform that fits the needs and wants of local people. I live in central Texas, near Austin. If very interested please contact me.

I agree a mass meetup would be cool, but there are already several aquarium and fishing conventions each year all over the country. You could probably organize a meetup with local forum members at one of those. I have yet to find any local members in the St. Louis area.

I never thought of an online "meet and greet" type thing. That could even be cool but I don't think it would work with how many people there are lol

RAP is ReefAPalooza. Trouble is, this convention happens in a few locations, so people generally go to what's closest. Lucky for me and Culprit , we're both in the SE, so hope to meet up at RAP Orlando one of these days.

Yeah but are they as good as Fishlore? I think not. Lol. I'm in Ohio with no one really close to me & really nothing around lol.

That's awesome. I doubt there's anything close to me. I do go to Florida every year on vacation though...

Lol, that's fine (I didn't know what RAP was either.... Glad you asked).
It's an app/website mainly made for gamers and you can chat with people, like verbally through cell phone/ laptop microphone and all, or you can just text everyone at the same time.

Me too. I feel so isolated in this hobby in a small town. Great people. Some even have a fish tank, but not the same.
I think somehow, someway we could organize locally. Or at least within a couple hours drive. Some can’t leave family, work or even have the cash for an overnight, cross country trip but would love to shmooze with other hobbies for an evening at a neutral location like a restaurant or a park. (Not one to give out private info) and I think that is a major hurdle for most. Or, at least the first major hurdle in organizing a meet and greet. After meeting face to face the needs and basic wants of those in attendance can be discussed and safety concerns can be addressed in a safe environment.

My town has 1 stop light. The next town over has 1 stoplight. Lol, I think I know everyone and no one has a fishy hobby. My local fish stores are at least a half an hour away. Other than that, I think I'd probably be driving 2 hours to find anyone

I agree, my nearest fish store is an hour away and there's no one I know that is as into fish tanks as much as me, that's why I'm on FishLore so much. The people around me who do have a tank usually have those tanks full of mollies and platies.
But if some of us did go, we could make shirts with our username on them and saying that we are from FL.

But wouldn’t it be worth it once or twice a year?

Someone should book a room for the Fishlorians lol

The problem with shirts is that I can't pronounce most of your usernames or I recognize you through your profile picture

Totally! But I still haven't found anyone close to me on here. Or any organizations at all.

Online forums are great for us small townies, but it has taken the personal friendship/relationship out of our lives. Don’t mean to wax too philosophical, but we all seem to share the same passions and in our isolation we have lost the opportunity to share it with others on a personal level. It’s kinda like being a new grandma but no one wants to see the new pics of the kid.

I’m not too computer savvy. But someone here must have some marketing skills to guide us in our efforts.
Please help is you have ideas

Agreed, but even when I do share it with my family/friends, they aren't as enthusiastic or understanding about it. It's like if they were trying to talk to me about brain surgery or something

Ideas for advertising locally, even if locally is a 200 sq mile radius to meet other hobbiest. Can believe I’m so crazy I’m the ONLY one in driving range.

It is! Vendors come and setup tables and display tanks and sell things. There’s generally a raffle or two going on as well. They’ll have seminars too!

Seriously though, you guys are great. I am a member of other forums (not fish-keeping) and they have done meetups every year.

Set something up in or near Austin and I'm in. I know I've seen some people from Houston on here so maybe even do something in between. I'd love to hang out and talk to people that don't look at you like you're crazy for saying a fish looks stressed. Lol

I'd be up for Austin, I have some old Navy buddies I haven't seen since I retired in the Austin area.

Austin it is! How do I get my info out to people with out posting it publicly. It will have to be before the holidays start. But will put in the grunt work if those willing to make the drive give me a little input on desired venue, resturaunt, park etc. my budget is flexible but there may be some awesome people out there who are paying down student debt, just started a family, or recently retired and it would be a shame to miss out on meeting them.
